“In response to what you were doing,” he corrected, though the distinction was slight.

Her gaze remained steady.

“And that didn’t concern you?”

“Not in the way you’re suggesting,” he said, after a brief pause. Then, more precisely, “You adapt quickly.”

“So do your wolves.”

“That’s how they survive.”

She held his gaze, not challenging, but pressing for clarity.

“Is that what I’m doing?”

He studied her for a moment—not her stance or breathing, but the way she stood without the structure Frostvein would have imposed on her. The darker Ironfang clothes sat on her more naturally than he had expected.

“Yes,” he said at last.

There was no warmth in the answer.

But neither was there dismissal.

She watched him as if weighing whether the word had been given freely or held back.

The familiar pressure beneath his sternum returned, no longer sharp, but persistent enough to be noticed.

“You said it would settle,” she said quietly.

“It will,” he answered, though his tone carried less finality than before.

“You seem very certain of that.”

“I prefer certainty where it can be maintained.”

The silence that followed was not brittle, but weighted.

Behind her, the yard continued in steady rhythm—steel, breath, repetition. Structure remained intact.

“For now,” she said.

Then she turned and stepped back into the flow of movement.

Soren remained where he was.

The rumors had quieted. The structure held. From the outside, everything remained aligned with expectation.

And yet the disturbance no longer felt external, as though something had been introduced into the system.

It had moved closer than that.

He drew a slow breath and placed the sensation where he placed all variables that had not yet resolved.

To be observed. To be contained.

And, if necessary, corrected.

Nothing here broke under pressure.
