“What does the date mean?”
“How badly do you want to know?” I smile. “Open the door and I’ll tell you.”
The silence echoes in the cell.
I lift my cuffed wrists. “Take these off. Let me walk out of here, and I’ll give you the girl, the date, and everything that comes after.”
He shakes his head. “You’re not leaving.”
“Then I guess you’re not that worried about her.”
His jaw tightens.
There. Now we’re negotiating. I smile wider. “Who has the notebook?” I ask like I’m asking about the weather tomorrow.
His expression shutters. “Not your concern.”
I nod. “Then neither is the girl.”
Gabriel stands.
That’s it? I keep my posture loose even as my mind starts rearranging the pieces.
He came down here with a photograph, a date, and questions. Not a name. Not a location. Not even certainty about what the date means.
It means the plan is still in motion. Good.
“You’re leaving?” I ask, a hint of disappointment in my tone. “And here I thought we were reconnecting.”
He pushes the chair back into the corner. “I got what I needed.”
I laugh. “You got nothing.”
He looks at me.
And then he smiles.
Fuck. That is not good. “What?” I ask cautiously.
“You tell me.”
The bastard. I laugh again, quieter this time. “You’re fishing.”
“Maybe.” His smile widens.
“And you still don’t know who she is.”
He doesn’t answer.
That interests me more than if he had. I study him, looking for the tell, but Gabriel gives me nothing. “Someone sent you down here,” I test.
“Good night, Cole.” He reaches for the door.
“Who?” I call after him. “Reyes.”
The lock releases and he steps out of my cell.
“Who has the notebook?”
