I lean down and slide my left arm around his waist, notching his good shoulder to mine as I slowly help him up. We walk at a snail’s pace to the bedroom, and once I get him settled, his injured shoulder propped up, I head for the bathroom. By the time I’m finished washing up, Finn’s already sleeping. I study his measured breaths, his relaxed expression, and the thick auburn eyelashes that kiss his cheeks. He’s looks so right lying in my bed. I could stare at him all night. Every night.
After heading to the kitchen to grab water and my phone, I wander back in and slip under the covers. Finn shifts and mumbles something I can’t hear, so I close my eyes and the room is silent, except for our breathing. Another shift, more muttering.
“Finn, are you okay?” I whisper.
“Mmm… oh yeah… Wolfie.”
I sigh, relieved. There’s a long pause, which I assume means that he’s fallen asleep again, so I place my head back on my pillow.
“Will you… be here… tomorrow?” he murmurs but doesn’t open his eyes.
“Of course.”
“Good, I can… say it… finally.”
He’s not making sense at this point, but I can’t help but smile. Even in his sleep he rambles. Just when I thought Finn couldn’t get more adorable. And I have it so fucking bad for him because I’ve never said that about anyone.
“Sleep now,” I encourage.
“Mmm, k. I love you. Night.”
What??????
I jackknife off the bed and stare at him.
“Finn?”
The only sound that greets me is soft snoring. Did he say he loved me, or did I imagine that?
Be realistic, he was half asleep, and probably didn’t even realize who he was talking to.
I want to wake him up, but I don’t. I can’t. Instead, I lie there and stare at his profile, until sleep eventually claims me too.
My alarm buzzes and I reach for my phone, swiping to shut it off. I’m facing away from Finn, playing possum. I’ve been awake for a while, but unable to wrap my head around last night. Maybe I dreamt the whole thing. Maybe he didn’t really say those words.
When I roll over, Finn’s sitting up, quietly scrolling on his phone.
“Hey,” I mumble as I level up on my elbow.
“Morning,” Finn leans over and kisses me.
“Did you sleep well?” I ask.
“Like a rock, as soon as my head hit the pillow.”
Shit. That means he doesn’t remember what he said…
“You were right, blow jobs really are necessary for my therapy and sleep,” he quips.
I smile even though my heart is lodged in my throat.
Don’t say anything.
“But there is something I want to talk about,” he adds. “Concerning last night.”
Maybe he didn’t forget. Is this it? Is he going to say it?
My heart hammers so hard in my chest I’m in danger of passing out.
