“I had the lab whip up a trial nerve tissue regeneration serum unique to Seminus demon physiology.”

Tavin narrowed his eyes. “And who is the sucker who volunteered to test it?”

“That sucker would be you.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Eidolon held up the syringe to observe its bright orange contents. “I’ll do the first one now. Deja, will you assist? I’ll show you what to do, and you can inject the next one at his place in the morning.”

She nodded. “Of course, Doctor. Will this hurt him?”

“Probably.”

Turning, she gave Tavin the briefest, evilest little smile. “That’s too bad.”

She definitely didn’t sound like she meant that. Man, she was full of mixed signals. One minute she seemed like she’d love to go a few rounds between the sheets, and the next, she seemed ready to use the sheets as his burial shroud.

Seriously, what the fuck? He’d heard that the Neebless and the Neethul were closely related, but right now, she seemed to be more Neethul than Neebless. He couldn’t decide if he liked it or not. He leaned toward not.

“You’re going to feel a pinch,” Eidolon said as he uncapped the syringe to reveal a shiny, sharp needle. “Or maybe a searing bullet of pain. I’m really not sure.”

“Doc, no offense intended, but sometimes you suck—owmotherfuckerholyshit!”

Through watery eyes of agony, he saw Deja smile. She smiled!

“I thought…” He sucked in a sharp breath. “I thought Neebless were known for their empathy.”

She shrugged. He was never going to figure her out.

But he might enjoy trying.
