The other car was a Camry. She does not look like the type to drive that. I turned my car off and waited, a few minutes later a silver Genesis drove up. It parked in front of the van, Dallas got out of the driver’s side and Aspen exited the passenger.

I opened my door when Dallas got on the sidewalk and Siren followed. There was nothing left to say, when I got close enough, I picked up speed.

“Dallas.” As soon as she turned around when I called her name, I hit her in the face.

From then on, we started fighting. I have been in two fights in my life, when I was ten and when I was fourteen. This one took the win and not because I was winning. But because of the principle.

Not because of Halo but because Dallas knew about me and played in my face. I kept replaying her approach in the mall in my head. I knew there was a hidden agenda in what she said. Her facial expression and phony innocence were a smack in my face. I did not know how long I was hitting her, but I had hold of that hair and wasn’t letting go.

“Got damn girl! You got her enough, let go!”

I don’t know whose voice that was, but they had me in the air. I saw Siren in the air as well with her bonnet off. It was an older white man holding her, Aspen was on the ground. Dallas’s face was bleeding and she was next to Aspen.

“YOU CAN KEEP HIM BY THE WAY! THE NIGGA IS ALL YOURS BUT JUST KNOW YOU’LL NEVER PLAY IN MY FACE AND GET AWAY WITH IT! NASTY ASS BITCH!” My voice got louder than it ever had before.

“Hey! Come on now settle down, I have a daughter your age. I can tell you come from a good family with support. Do not ever let anybody, especially a man get you out of character. That girl messed around with your boyfriend, so you mad.

I get it, to be young and hot headed. But never let emotions make you ruin your life because of a split decision. You and your friend go ahead and head home. Call it a win and put this behind you.” The man who had me in the air preached to me.

He was an older black man who seemed to care even though he did not know me. He opened the door for me to get in my car. The white man that had Siren opened the door for her too. We both got in and I drove off.

I gave Siren a big hug when I dropped her off and thanked her so much for having my back. We met almost four months ago, and she quickly became a very important friend.

“Want me to come over?” She asked when she opened my car door.

“Not right now, I’m about to go over my sister’s house. Love you, I’ll text you later.”

Siren said goodbye then closed the door. I drove to Regan’s house in silence and in a hurry. Only thing on my mind was not getting into an accident and not getting pulled over for speeding. I did not need any more problems today, for the rest of the year if I had it my way.

I knocked on the door to Regan’s house. It never even crossed my mind that I had a key. That’s how I knew I wasn’t thinking so clearly. Regan unlocked the door and tied her robe. As soon as she let me inside, I hugged her and broke down crying. Regan closed the door, locked it, and asked me what happened.

Halo

Fast forward before the first

My loud phone pulled me from the deep sleep I was in. With my eyes still closed I stretched my arm out on my nightstand so I could feel my phone. But I did not feel anything, and the ringtone was getting louder. I opened my eyes and followed the sound to the floor. I don’t even remember knocking my phone on the floor.

When I grabbed it and saw Blake’s name, I answered it. “Sup cuz---”

“Yo’! Get up and come get me! Story came and picked up Siren! You smashed Dallas and I don’t know where they went!”

That woke me all the way up, I turned and looked at the empty side of my bed. Story’s overnight bag was gone. I leaped out of bed and threw my pajama pants on, a shirt, socks, my blue Airforce Ones and rushed out of my place.

“Did they say where they were going?” I asked Blake as I burned rubber out of my parking space.

“No and Siren isn’t answering her phone. Cuz, tell me you did not smash Dallas.”

“I fucked up cuz, she found out last night and shit turned up. I’m about to come swoop you, if she picked Siren up then I think they went to Lazy Daze.” I was driving like a maniac at high speed and dodging red lights.

“Halo what the hell! Even I wouldn’t have done no shit like that. Not only was that too close to home but Story is perfect as they get.”

“I know that, Blake! You tellin’ me something that I already know! Come outside I’m turning the corner now.”

She wasn’t saying anything wrong, I just did not need to hear that right now. Blake got in the car, and I pulled off before she could close the door all the way. I was glad she did not lecture me at all. All she did was call Siren repeatedly, I did the same with Story but we both did not get anywhere.

“Shit.” Blake said when we got on Lazt Daze block and a small crowd was in front of the strip.

I parked carelessly and we both jumped out of my car.
