Greek stepped between us. Golden held his hands up with a houmous expression.

“My bad brother, be easy---

“Naw, you need to be easy and remain respectful. This is why I don’t like talking about this with you around. Just because you live your life with a different woman day by day don’t mean it’s wrong if I decide not to.”

“You right, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have disrespected her like that and I apologize.”

“You both need to cool the hell down because if you fight in this kitchen and knock over any of this food I’m shooting you both in the foot. Sit down.” Greek pulled out his big brother card. “Gone and continue Halo.

“You were right, I told her I love her last month, and she didn’t say it back. Still hasn’t and I am not trying to rush her, but I feel a way about her not saying it. I’m in my head and I feel like a sucka.” I finally admitted.

Story was my girl, that was my boo and she broke through something I did not think anybody would ever break. I knew I wasn’t gay, never would be that but I did not think I even liked women.

At least not the was a heterosexual man should. I felt like I was diseased, tainted, shameful and perverted to ever be with a woman.

But like my mama used to say, God has his own plans. Here I was in a relationship that I had a top priority in my life.

“Can I say something without the risk of getting beat up or shot in the foot?” Golden asked me. He was serious with no humor in his tone.

I granted him his request.

“This all new to you and right now you’re feeling rejected because she did not say it back.”

“But who said she rejected him just ‘because she hasn’t.” Greek added. “Could be she just ain’t there yet or maybe some shit blocking her.”

“And that’s true too but our brother wouldn’t be taking it so hard had he got some experience under his belt. Before y’all think I’m being funny just hear me out. Brother, I’m not saying to you need to go climb in a bunch of pussy.

I’m just saying you put all your eggs in one basket for the first time. Story is experience more than you, so she already got control of the situation and her feelings better than you.”

“Can’t believe you said some sensible shit.” Greek praised him then he looked at me. “He got a point Halo but then again the only way you’ll silence your mind is if you holla at Story.”

“But won’t it come off as me pressuring her?” I was all kinds of confused and needed clarity.

“Naw because you’re not asking her to tell her to say it back or making it seem like you mad about it. All you’re doing is getting to know more about her past in a settle way. Like asking about her ex’s or even her first time. See what she says, and you’ll be able to see what’s up.”

I blew out my mouth and rubbed my hand down my face. Greek went back to cooking and put us out the kitchen. Me and Golden went to the living room to play the game.

“My bad about earlier again Halo. You know how my mouth can get and it needs to be checked sometimes.”

“You good brother, apology accepted.” I picked up the controller so I could select my NBA team.

“Look, I want to add to what I said earlier. Something that might help you a little more.” Golden said as he picked his usual team, the Dallas Mavericks.

“Alright.” I picked the Boston Celtics.

“Don’t tell Greek but sometimes, and I do mean sometimes, if I need help with figuring out a female then I’ll ask another one. And I’m not talking about auntie Imani. I mean like friends, you need female friends’ brother.

You don’t have to be fucking them, but you can have home girls who you just kick it with like how you do us. No better person to know females better than another one. You have got a girl now and that’s good but don’t make your whole life all about her.

Nothing is wrong with having friends, still hanging out, and having an enjoyable time. Just wanted to plant that seed in your head. You might as well continue building your life the way you want it starting with Story. Now, make some friends and be a little more social. Ya feel me?”

What Golden was saying made sense. I had been in the background and disassociated myself from a lot since I was ten years old.

“Yeah, I feel you.”
