But I was intrigued, “Go ahead and ask.”

“A-Are you Halo’s ex?”

A small smile appeared on my face as I went into thought about he and I. “In a way I am. Halo and I have an interesting past, he used to make me feel better than any woman could feel. But I had to leave him and address other responsibilities. Our relationship would have been frowned upon by people who would not understand us. But he was my soulmate then and still is now.”

The way Story looked at me, she stopped crying and her eyes got tight a little. It made me smile more when I saw it.

“He told you about us. Didn’t he?”

She did not say anything, but it was all over her face. Then she closed her mouth and gave me the vilest expression. I had never had anyone look at me that way. It made me angry, slightly embarrassed and judged.

“Don’t you look at me like that you lucky, stupid bitch! That man was born to be with me! You could never understand it!” I had to calm down.

“I read and listened to your messages. He loves you so much to the point that it breaks my heart. He even texted you this morning. I feel like I have studied you enough so I will talk to him like you. Then, I’ll destroy your phone, have Keanu kill you and I will work my way back into Halo’s life. Once I do that.” I leaned down and whispered in her ear.

“I am killing my husband so me and Halo can be together. Because he is the only man that I will ever be faithful to. It was best that you blackmailed Keanu. It brought me back to Halo.”

Story turned her head to me, and she seemed astounded by what I was saying. But I just grinned then I went and grabbed the roll of duct tape. As I sealed her mouth back, I spoke.

“You will be managed tomorrow morning. It is a shame Story, you are a waste of a beautiful girl.” I left the room, closed the door, and went back upstairs.

Halo

“You okay Halo?” Auntie Imani wanted to know.

We were at the office going over a new hit that we had coming up. I was paying attention and texting too.

“It’s Story. She’s acting off, like something’s up.” I answered with my forehead tight and responding to the latest text.

“Aw hell. Brother, we do not need a repeat of three years ago.” Greek inserted.

“I found it fun when he was tweaking out. Remember that time we had to put Benadryl in his food to knock him out.” Golden had his feet crossed on the table laughing.

I gave him the middle finger and Greek too since he laughed with him.

“Y’all leave him alone. Halo, what’s happening with Story?” Auntie asked.

“We ain’t talked on the phone and when I try to, she doesn’t answer but she texts.”

“Shit.” Golden cussed.

I looked at him. “What?”

“I know when I do that it means my fist is in some---”

“Golden! Just don’t help!” Uncle Thaddeus playfully hit Golden in the head with the papers in his hand.

Golden laughed with his hands up, “I’m just saying! If I only text and do not call, then it means I am on some sneaky shit. Bro, I’m not being bold, you know I want you with Story. Don’t guess, just ask her what’s up. By now she should know you’ll pop up if need be.”

“The only reason why I want to wait on questioning her is because she said she just started her period---

“OOO fuck!” My brothers and Thaddeus said the exact same thing.

Imani said, “Tread lightly Halo. If she just came on, then those first two days are serious. That for sure is a valid reason for her acting differently.”

“Agreed nephew. Your auntie is like Bruce and the Hulk a week before and the first three days during.”

“I will make you sleep in the guest room if you keep talking about me like I’m not here.” She was playing but he did not want to try her, so he kissed her and apologized.
