Dre turned around and looked at me.

“Nigga, you sound crazy as hell. What the fuck are you talkin’ about?”

“You heard me… I just met my wife.”

Dre laughed. He just didn’t understand, but I could already see it.

Chapter 4

Nylah

Ifinally had some free time at home and was able to work on the dress for Mariah.

I was low-key nervous. I’ve only designed dresses for family or friends, and having my first client thrown at me was a lot, but I was glad Denise did it.

I was in the zone, my music playing softly so I could hum along. My TV was on 90 Day Fiancé, trying to catch up on the newest season. I was mid-stitch on the bodice when my phone went off beside me.

I looked down at it and saw it was a number I didn’t recognize. I almost let it go to voicemail, but something told me to answer it.

“Hello?”

“Damn, you answer the phone with an attitude?”

I looked at the phone. “Who the fuck is this?”

He laughed. “It’s Rosama, princess. How you doin’?”

I took the needle out of my hand and placed it beside me.

“I'm good, workin'. How are you?”

“You workin’? I like that. What do you do?”

“I design clothes. I'm in school for it, and I work at my friend's store.”

He started clapping. “I like that! Now you just need me by ya side to complement you.”

“Complement me? Nigga, please. I don’t need anybody to add anything to my life. I got it out the mud on my own.”

“I didn’t say you needed it,” he shot back. “I'm sayin’ I'm tryin’ to be part of it. It’s a difference between needin’ somebody and wanting somebody around, mama.”

“You got a lotta mouth for a nigga that ran into my car.”

“And you answered the phone and still talkin’ to me, so what that tell you?”

“That I got questionable judgment, apparently.”

He laughed, deep and easy. “Nah. It tells me you're interested. You said you peeped me at the block party. It’s okay. We are grown.”

I paused for a second. “The only thing I'm interested in is finishing this dress, and that’s it.”

“That’s cool, and you can do that. It doesn’t mean you can’t talk to a nigga.”

Rosama was smooth. His voice was deep, almost like Pop Smoke. The way he talked made me roll my eyes and smile at the same time.

“Are you always like this? Cocky as fuck?”

He laughed. “Never cocky, sweetheart. I can back up what I say.”
