“I just… I don’t wanna be away from my baby five days a week.”
“I know, sis. But it wouldn’t be forever.”
We got quiet for a second before one of us snorted, and then we were both laughing.
“Why the hell are we laughing?” I asked, wiping under my eyes.
“Girl, I don’t know. But this some weird Twilight Zone-ass shit. Both of them popping back up on the same day?”
I shook my head. “Right…so, what are you gonna do about PB?”
Nourah gave me a look. “Absolutely nothing. I got a man. One I love. One I’d marry if he’d stop playing and pop the question.” She held up a finger. “Now, that man did look fine as hell in that suit. I know fabric, and just know that shit cost an arm, a leg, a coochie lip, an eyelash, a big toe, and a nostril.”
“Nourah!”
“I’m just saying! But Carl is still my man, my man, my man.”
“I wasn’t asking if you were finna cheat. I asked if you were gonna talk to him again.”
“I doubt it.” She waved it off, then looked around. “Wait. Where my boo at?”
“She ate and knocked right out. They had a little party at school today too.”
I pulled up the pictures on my phone.
“Aww! Send me these.”
“I got you.”
She handed my phone back, and we sank into the couch.
But in the back of my mind, I already knew what tomorrow looked like.
I was calling Opal.
The next morning…
I’d been walking back and forth since I’d gotten Oaklynn up for the day.
She was in her highchair, going to town on the porridge I made her, eyes glued to the TV, banging that spoon on the tray between bites.
Meanwhile, I had my phone in my hand, talking to my damn self.
“Just call, girl…. No… don’t call. Don’t embarrass yourself. You already told that woman you weren’t interested. They probably picked somebody else by now anyway.”
I stopped in the middle of the floor and looked down at my phone. Scrolled through my contacts until I landed on Opal.
I hit call before I could talk myself out of it.
It rang several times before her voicemail picked up.
I kissed my teeth and almost hung up.
Girl, just leave the message. You never know.
The beep hit.
“Hi, Opal. Good morning. This is Noree Marcell. We met yesterday for the nanny interview. I wanted to apologize for how things ended. I’m still very interested in the position, and if you haven’t found anyone yet, I’d love the chance to finish the interview. Thank you and have a blessed day.”
