My eyebrows went up. “Why not?”

“Because I’m taken. So, whatever we could’ve had is null and void.” She looked at me. “And I’m pretty sure you got a nice lady on your arm. Somebody like you, you probably tied down by now.”

“Nah. I’m single as hell.” I paused. “But my situation a little complicated.”

“Complicated how?”

“Ma’am, here’s your car.” The valet came up to us and pointed to her car, as if she didn’t know it was hers. But I guess I could understand since it was getting a little backed up, more valet attendants were pulling up with cars, and we were in the way.

We stepped out the way, and I walked her around to the driver’s side. Once she slid in, got comfortable, and put her seatbelt on, I closed her door for her. Then she rolled the window down slowly.

“Well, congrats again on your event. Maybe I’ll see you again in another year and a half. Who knows.”

“Aight, you got jokes.”

“I’m just keeping it real.”

I rubbed my hand down my jaw. “Damn, this is crazy though. What’s the odds of this shit?”

“What you mean?”

“Your sister bumped into my brother today. He was doing interviews for a nanny position for our nephew he took in.”

Something flickered across her face for half a second, and then it was gone. “Oh really? That is kinda crazy.”

“It gotta be fate.”

“Boy, bye. I said I’m taken.”

We started laughing again, and I put my hand on the roof of her car and leaned down a little.

“Let me get your number.”

“Why? You ain’t even use it last time.”

“I told you, a lot came up. Shit happened. Life was on some real bullshit then.”

“Yeah, I know. I get it.” She shrugged. “I’m not trying to be funny. I’m just stating facts.” She looked up at me. “Besides, what are we going to talk about, Princeton?”

“Whatever you wanna talk about, Nourah… N-O-U-R-A-H, right?” I smirked soon as she blushed. “Yeah. You thought I forgot?”

She blinked. “I did, and I’m impressed,” she said, pulling out her phone. “Let me get your number this time. And I’ll decide if I wanna call you. Or text you.”

“Aight.” I took her phone and put my number in, then hit the call button and let it ring in my pocket.

She giggled. “Not the oldest trick in the book.”

“Ma’am,” the valet said, walking back over. “I’m sorry, but I’m gonna need you to move. You’re backing up the line.”

I handed her phone back and tapped the roof twice. “I’ll tell you how complicated my love life is when we talk later.”

“Sir. Goodbye.”

She pulled off, and I stood there watching that pink car until it turned out of the lot, smirking like a damn fool before I headed back inside.

Ifelt like a nigga was having an out-of-body experience, real talk. After watching Noree pull off, I just stood in that same spot for a minute, tryna process all this shit. I couldn’t even tell you how long I’d been standing out there. Eventually, that Atlanta heat started whooping my ass, sweat dripping down my forehead, so I finally headed back inside. I barely made it three steps into the house before Unc caught me.

He came around the corner from the kitchen with a dish towel over his shoulder and stopped when he saw me.
