“Whatever.” She shakes her head. “That’s what douchebags say.”

She tries to slip past me, but I shift my stance and step in front of her again.

“Seriously, fucker, you better move.”

I look down at her. The expression on her face could kill a man.

“It was arranged.”

Her expression falters.

“What?”

“It wasn’t real,” I tell her. “I needed a wife. I’m thirty-six. My parents want grandchildren.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me!”

“Katie, look around,” I say, gesturing toward the glass walls and the massive grounds beyond them. “Do you see my life? It’s not exactly conducive to meeting someone.”

Her expression softens a little.

“You met me.”

“I stalked you,” I remind her. “And it still took me a week to actually talk to you.”

She tries not to smile. I can see her fighting it, pressing her lips together, but it slips out anyway.

“See?” I say. “I make you smile.”

“But you lied to me.”

“Eh.” I shrug lightly. “I withheld information.”

I step closer and place a hand on her arm. She doesn’t pull away.

“I let you sleep in my bed. You kissed me in front of all those people downstairs, and I’m willing to bet every single one of them knew you were engaged.”

“It doesn’t matter,” I say. “I’m their boss, and I’m not engaged anymore. I just came back from her house.”

She stares at me.

“Dude.”

Chapter 14

Katie

Idon’t move. I stand there staring at him while my brain replays the last eighteen hours in painful, humiliating detail. The car. The porch. The way I practically climbed into his lap, forgetting every life lesson about self-respect. My face burns as the memory hits me full force. I was ready. Completely, embarrassingly ready. One more minute and I would have handed over my V-card like an idiot to a man I’d known for less than a day.

Any normal woman would have stormed off by now. She would have thrown something or slapped him. Instead, I’m rooted to the floor while my brain processes the fact that Michael Amato—Mr. Tall, Dark, and Apparently a walking bad decision—forgot to mention one very important detail about his life. He was fucking engaged.

Screw this. I shove into him since he won’t move. His hands clamp around my waist before I can even get past him.

“I never even kissed her,” he says.

I tilt my head up.

“That can’t be true.”
