Victor had orchestrated this entire situation. He’d pushed Amai into this marriage. He’d used me as leverage to secure his position in the family’s operations.
And now that things were falling apart, he was telling me to stay calm and gather information.
Like I was some kind of spy.
Like my life wasn’t on the line.
“Amai pulling the household resources means something is already moving,” Syx continued, quieter now. “He’s not just angry. He’s preparing. And when this comes down on you, your father is not coming to pull you out.”
“You don’t know that.”
Tears burned behind my eyes.
“He just proved it. On the phone. Thirty seconds ago.” Syx looked at me, steady, none of the anger left. Just that thing in his face that I didn’t know what to do with, the thing that kept being there regardless of how complicated I made it. “You need to leave. Tonight. Before whatever Amai’s building gets here.”
“Syx, you don’t understand. I have no access. Nowhere to go.”
“I understand perfectly. I understand that you’re trapped in a marriage to a man who doesn’t love you. I understand that your father is using you as a pawn in some fucked-up power game. And I understand that if you stay here, you’re going to end up dead.”
The words hung in the air between us.
Dead.
I’d been trying not to think about it. Trying to convince myself that Amai wouldn’t go that far. That my father would intervene. That somehow, I’d be okay.
But Syx was right.
I wasn’t okay.
I was a liability now. A loose end. A problem that needed to be solved.
And the Landrys didn’t leave problems unsolved.
“I can’t just leave,” I whispered.
“Why not?”
“Because—” I struggled to find the words. “Even if I escape the Landry’s my daddy may send someone after me. The last time I left he sent for me and had me dragged back to this hellhole.”
“Even if staying kills you?”
I didn’t have an answer for that.
Syx pulled me into his arms, and I let myself collapse against him.
“I know you’re scared,” he murmured against my hair. “I know this is fucked up. But I’m not going to let anything happen to you. You hear me? I’ll protect you.”
I wanted to believe him.
God, I wanted to believe him so badly.
But the truth was, I didn’t know who to trust anymore.
My father had left me exposed.
My husband had cut me off.
And Syx—sweet, loyal, twenty-year-old Syx—was offering me an escape I wasn’t sure I deserved.
