Meagan ends the call. Her hand is still on the counter. The triumph of five minutes ago sits next to the wreckage of a man she has never met, and the distance between the two is the distance between believing you can win this and understanding what winning costs the people standing near the blast radius.

She looks at me. The look isn’t professional. It isn’t the analytical assessment I've been on the receiving end of since the gala corridor. It is the look of a woman who just spent a day building a weapon with a man she chose to trust after he spent months proving she shouldn't. The choice is sitting in her eyes without a single layer of verification between it and the surface.

"Come here," she says.

I go to her. The kitchen island is between us and I walk around it without slowing down. She is standing on the hardwood. Her hair is down.

I stop close enough that the heat between us erases the last inch of professional distance. Her hand comes up and finds the collar of my shirt, the same grip she's used to pull me into her before, except this time there's no anger in it. No testing. No negotiation.

My hands find her waist. The bones of her hips fit against my palms with a familiarity that does specific damage to the part of me that's been running operational calculations all day. The calculations stop.

What replaces them is her. Just her. The weight and warmth of a woman whose mind took apart a conspiracy over breakfast and whose body against mine is currently taking apart every defense I rebuilt during the hours when my hands were busy with something other than her skin.

"We should eat something," she says against my mouth. "I haven't eaten since the coffee."

"You haven't eaten the coffee either. You've let it go cold in four separate mugs."

"Five." She pulls me closer by the collar. "The fifth one you made is cold on the nightstand from last night."

"That's a pattern, Keating."

"Don't call me Keating when you're about to take me to bed."

"Who says I'm taking you anywhere?"

Her mouth finds mine. The kiss isn’t the test it was last night. The caution is gone, stripped away by a day spent building the same weapon side by side, trusting each other with the operational details that will determine whether Arthur Harrow's machine survives. The trust is no longer theoretical. It lives in the filing that carries both our fingerprints, and her mouth against mine is the first thing today that has nothing to do with Arthur Harrow.

I lift her onto the counter. She wraps her legs around my waist and the position puts her face level with mine, her eyes holding me at the range where I can see every thought that crosses behind them. Her hands work the buttons of my shirt with the focused efficiency she brings to everything, and when her palms press flat against my chest the contact registers in my spine.

"Bedroom," she says.

"You're giving orders again."

"I'm making suggestions. You're welcome to present a counterproposal."

I carry her there. Her legs tighten around me and her mouth stays on my neck, teeth grazing the tendon below my ear hard enough to make my hands grip her thighs tighter than I intended.

The bedroom door is open. The bed is unmade from this morning. The late-afternoon light catches her when I lay her down, and the sight of Meagan Keating in my arms and in daylight hits harder than any debrief my training ever covered.

This is different from every time before. There is nothing to test. The results are in. The data is clean. What remains is the thing itself: two people who have chosen each other with full knowledge of the cost, reaching for each other without armor or agenda.

I undress her slowly. My mouth follows my hands, tracing the geography I've memorized in the dark and am seeing now in the light. The curve of her throat. The ridge of her collarbone. The slope of her breast where the nipple hardens under my tongue before I've finished the stroke. She arches into the contact and her fingers thread through my hair, pulling this time, guiding my mouth harder against her.

"You're being careful," she says.

"I'm being thorough."

"Last night I told you to stop that."

"Last night you told me to stop handling you like something breakable. I'm not handling you like something breakable." I kiss the hollow at the base of her throat, the place where her pulse runs, and the rhythm underneath my lips is fast and steady.

"I'm handling you like something I intend to keep."

Her breath catches. The sound is small enough to miss if you're not listening for it, and I’ve been listening for every sound this woman makes since long before I had the right to.

Her hands find my belt before I've finished with her shirt. The efficiency of her fingers on the buckle tells me she's done waiting for thorough. She frees me from my jeans and wraps her hand around my cock. The stroke she gives me is slow and deliberate, focused attention applied to my body the same way she applies it to every problem she intends to solve.

My forehead drops to her collarbone. The groan that comes out of me isn’t something I would permit anyone else to hear.
