“You think making me disappear now, after storming into your office, won’t put the spotlight on you?” I asked, and despite my state, I tried to present as much confidence as possible.
“Don’t worry. Mitchell will take care of that, and no one is ever going to find your body. As far as everyone else is concerned, you simply ran so you didn’t have to face the consequences of what you did to Bennet. You’ll be a fugitive. Six. Feet. Under.”
His foot rammed into my stomach again, and I let out a groan. Wilson turned his back to me and Hank stepped up with a gun in his hand, which there was no doubt he was about to aim at me.
Bang.
Crash.
Before he could get rid of me once and for all, the door came crashing down, the window was smashed, and bullets flew through the air.
One found its home in Hank’s arm. The others landed on Shorty and Stretchy’s chest. One zipped right past Wilson’s head before he turned his gun and shot at the man responsible for almost killing him. Dare.
Dare ducked away before he was harmed as Teddy barged through the door and took a shot at Wilson, but he was already walking backwards, into the shadows, and he was replaced by other men.
I should have known there’d be more around. That he’d have more backup in case things went south. All I could hope for was that my guys knew too. If they’d done their job right, they should have known, and my guys were good at their job.
Teddy approached Hank who dropped to the ground, putting his hands up, and Azrael came right behind him, surrounding Hank. Last, Dare entered and started untying me.
“Are you okay?” he asked, and I nodded.
Dare’s face contorted, and he let out a hiss that told me I looked more the worse for wear than I thought.
“Is that Captain Mitchell?” Azrael asked.
Hank looked at Azrael, full of rage and hatred.
“Fucking hell,” Azrael replied when he’d taken a good look at Hank.
“Let’s get out of here.” Dare stood back up, and I realized my hands were free.
Thankfully, Dare took pity on me and helped me up too, because as soon as I was off the floor, everything started spinning. Everything went blurry again.
I closed my eyes for a second, and when I opened them again Ari was in front of me, holding a light in one hand and a cloth in the other.
“A-Ari,” I groaned.
As I spoke his name, he took the light off my eyes and I could focus on his gaze. His eyebrows were knotted in worry, and he used both hands to wipe my face with the clean cloth.
“Wyatt. Are you okay? Do you know where you are?”
“Uhm…” I hummed and tried to look around, but things started spinning again.
“Do you know what happened?” Ari continued.
“Y-yeah. Wilson. Hank,” I muttered.
Ari nodded and cupped my face for a moment, focusing his eyes on me, and despite the haze that clouded my vision, I saw him.
I really, truly saw him.
I saw him as the man I’d been waiting for all my life. The man I was in love with and who was in love with me. The man I wanted to spend the rest of my days—however numbered—with.
THIRTY-FOUR
ARI
“I’m going to tell you three words. Can you repeat them for me?” I asked.
