Then Julian makes the mistake of opening social media. “Oh no.”
Gabe doesn’t even look up. “What?”
“There’s a fan theory thread.”
Xander sighs like a man exhausted by humanity. “What now?”
Julian bursts out laughing. “Okay, this one says Willow is secretly the mastermind behind Redemption Records.”
I blink. “What?”
“Heavy is the head that wears the diner apron,” Julian says solemnly.
I throw a bread roll at him. He catches it one handed, looking deeply pleased with himself.
“Another one,” he continues, scrolling now, “thinks the four of us are soft launching a cult.”
“That one’s fair,” I mutter.
Gabe laughs into his wine glass.
Xander leans back in his chair. “So, solutions.”
Ah, yes. The business meeting portion of dinner. My favorite.
Julian points his fork dramatically. “We fake our deaths.”
“No.”
“We release twelve fake scandals to bury the real one.”
Xander shakes his head. “That’s worse.”
“We frame Gabe for tax fraud.”
Gabe finally looks up. “I’m not discussing finances with you anymore.”
“Coward.”
I snort despite myself. Xander’s mouth twitches.
Gabe folds his hands calmly against the table. “We need narrative redirection.”
“Which sounds deeply evil when you say it like that,” I inform him.
“It’s practical.”
“It’s PR manipulation.”
“Those are synonyms.”
Julian leans back in his chair. “What if we leaned harder into the mysterious compound thing?”
I stare at him. “You want to become cryptids?”
“Yes.”
Xander says dryly, “You already dress like one.”
