Rossi.

Then dread sinks into the pit of my stomach. I don’t want to talk to him. I don’t want to fix this. It’s broken and as much as I love Rossi . . . these past few days have proven to me that I don’t think I have been in love with him for a while.

I should feel like I’ve lost the love of my life. But I don’t. We’ve been so disconnected—are so disconnected—that whatever was holding us together has simply disintegrated. And I’m okay.

Those are the same three words I typed to Skylar over and over earlier.

She thought maybe I was bolstering so she wouldn’t be worried about me.

But I wasn’t. I truly am . . . okay.

I may be the old toy on the shelf he didn’t want to take out and play for a while, but haven’t I treated him the same way?

It’s run its course.

That is my mantra for the day. Was before I saw Lachlan down in the lobby. Still has been after.

“Who is it?” I ask before I step up toward the peephole.

“Lach,” he says at the same time I see him in the distorted view finder.

I open the door without thinking, surprise leading the way. “What are you doing here?” I ask flummoxed. “How did you know my room number? How did—”

“I have my ways.” He winks and then holds out his hand much like Rossi did weeks ago at the track. His words are eerily similar. “Come with me.”

The difference is my urge to say yes is almost automatic.

My smile is shy. “I’d love to but I can’t. I have to leave for my flight soon.”

“Screw the flight. I’ll get you another one.”

“Lachlan.”

“You need the night off.” His grin is as tempting as his words.

“Where do you want to go?”

A roguish twinkle lights up his eyes. “Do you trust me?”

The answer shouldn’t be so easy, but it’s there as sure as the books he got me—which are packed in my carry-on. “Yes.”

“Good. Grab a jacket. Let’s go.”

Despite knowing the city well, I have no idea where he’s taking me. We drive in silence, him hunching down behind the wheel to see street signs and follow directions it seems he knows.

Missing a flight to go on a mystery adventure? Who am I right now? I don’t really know and to be honest, I don’t really care. All I’m thinking about is how welcome the warm, summer night air feels as it whips through my hair on what feels like an old country road, and how the man beside me brings a sense of calm to me like I’ve never felt before.

I’m pulled from my thoughts when Lachlan turns into a deserted parking lot. There’s a row of trees in front of us and a light in the far-off distance.

“C’mon,” he says enthusiastically as he exits the car, opens my door for me, and holds his hand out again.

“Where are we?”

“You’ll see in a minute.”

I narrow my eyes at him but climb out, curious and excited.

It doesn’t take long for me to realize we’re on a golf course. A very closed, very empty one at that.
