“Nice try?”
“It was creative.” He smirks but gives an admonishing shake of his head. “I look forward to seeing you participate in those outreach programs though. Charity always looks good and makes you feel good.”
Fuck.
He shoves his hands in his pockets and strolls away with me looking after him and shaking my head.
I just lied to my dad to hide my desire over a woman I can’t have.
What is wrong with me? When have I ever let a woman threaten all that I’ve worked for?
And yet here I am, skimming the crowd like a teenager waiting for a glimpse of her.
Wondering why I always have to be the good guy. The one who takes the high road. The one concerned about everyone else instead of taking care of my own needs and wants and desires.
Team.
Teammate.
Crew.
What the fuck, mate?
What the actual fuck.
You want a seat with Apex.
That must be your one and only focus.
Not delivering “flowers” to a woman who can never be yours.
Even if her smile of thanks made my fucking year.
CHAPTER TEN
Blair
I’m in a state of shock.
I shot for the moon, expecting to land on the stars and instead . . . landed on the actual freaking moon. There was no way that the biggest pop star on the planet, Tori Michelle, would say yes to performing at our masquerade ball. Not a chance in hell.
But I asked anyway.
I wrapped my request in commentary about how she’ll be in town the same weekend, how it’s a charity benefitting various charities she’s been affiliated with in the past, and how it’s an event surrounding one of the most popular sports on earth. I packaged it all up, sent the request to her management company, and then laughed at how ridiculous it all sounded.
But holy shit.
She. Said. Yes.
And now? Now I just want to celebrate a hard day’s work even if that means snuggling up to Rossi and watching mindless television.
There are muffled voices behind his door when I knock. The television sound lowers. The door opens.
“Hey.” Rossi’s eyebrows furrow as I look beyond him and see a couple of people—women and men—on the couch behind him.
And it’s not like this isn’t normal. This is his home for a week while he’s at a race and so people being in and out of his suite is common. The difference is usually when he sees me, he pulls me into him, hugs me, and then kicks them all out.
He chooses me.
