“Nice. Close enough to be able to get to Monaco when I need to, and a helluva lot more practical on my salary.”
“So it’s by necessity then. One more question.”
“I think this Q&A is a little lopsided.”
“Last one. I promise.”
“Okay. What?”
“Since you’ve traveled the world . . . if you could pick anywhere in it to live, where would you choose?”
“My answer is lame.”
“No answer is lame.” I top up her glass, enjoying the flush on her cheeks the alcohol has added.
“Well, more cheesy than lame.”
“I’m all for cheesy. Lay it on me.” I pat my chest and grin.
“The place I’d choose is wherever the people I love are. The location doesn’t matter. Oh my God, that is cheesy.” She squeals and covers her face.
“There’s no need to be embarrassed.” Wouldn’t I have said exactly the same thing? I reach out to pull her hand off her face, and we both falter at the motion. My hands on her, our faces closer than they were, and her lips right fucking there. Her pulse pounds beneath my fingers where they’re wrapped around her wrist. I can hear her stuttered breath. My voice softens. “I love that answer. It says a lot about you and what’s important to you.”
Let go, Lach.
Her shoulders rise and fall as her lips part softly.
What the fuck are you doing?
Let go.
This time I listen, but not before the damage is done. Not before I see her hands tremble slightly. Not before I know I’m not the only one affected when we touch.
“See? Now you have dirt on me. Not as salacious as you thought, now, is it?” Her chuckle is tinged with nerves.
“Dirt, huh?” I try to recover as adrenaline races through me.
Is the fact that I wanted to kiss you enough dirt?
“Yep.” She swallows forcibly. “Dirt is always important. Blackmail and leverage aren’t beneath me.”
“Okay, so you’re telling me that I better watch out and stay on your good side?”
She flashes a grin. “That’s the best place to be, Evans. Trust me.”
And then I fall even more under her spell.
CHAPTER SIX
Blair
“That’s adorable.”
Lachlan shrugs. “I’d call it . . . manly,” he teases.
I adjust my legs curled up beneath me. The bar stopped serving drinks what feels like hours ago, so we moved to a small table and chair set on the far side of the lounge that borders the lobby. I’m too tired to even think about what happened earlier or how his hands on my wrist made me feel. Feel? More like evoke every damn sensation known to man.
“Lachlan, you were dressed in a blue tutu. I’d say that’s a tad more adorable, cute, whatever else you want to call it, than manly.”
