“Of course. I’m not exactly dressed for dinner. I can run back and change.”
“Sutton. Please.” He holds up his hands and laughs. “I have no agenda. I swear. There is no need to be on edge because I’m here.”
“I’m not nervous, I just wasn’t expecting you and wouldn’t want to make the wrong impression with my island casual attire.”
“Your island casual is just fine. I assure you.” He looks around as if he’s getting a lay of the land—or looking for his brother—before he holds his hand out for me to lead the way inside. “I look forward to hearing about everything.”
My heart thumps in my chest as we walk down the path.
I’m not sure why I’m so rattled about him being here.
This is his resort just as much as it’s Callahan’s.
But I haven’t slept with Ledger.
And I fear that, somehow, I’ll give it away that I have with his brother. Who may or may not be meeting up with another woman tonight.
CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
Callahan
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t the elusive Callahan Sharpe in the flesh.”
Every part of me stills at the voice, rejects the sound of it. Keone’s eyebrows raise before I slowly turn around and face the woman standing behind me.
“Gia.”
“You remembered my name. Too bad you didn’t remember my hotel room number.” Her painted red lips curve up in a seductive smile as her eyes drink me in.
“Some things are better left forgotten.” I manage a not so friendly smile.
“Everybody knows, Cal. Thanks to your bathroom proposition, you selling us out to get some prized pussy is the talk of the fucking town.”
Gia would love knowing her actions caused a major showdown between the Sharpe brothers. Something we’ve yet to recover from. She’d revel in it.
“Now, you’re just being mean.” She pouts dramatically, knowing that every single person’s eyes in this bar are on the stunning woman before me.
A woman I have zero interest in.
“So you’ve sought me out, what exactly is it that you need from me, Gia?”
Her low chuckle vibrates through me. “Now that’s a loaded question if ever I’ve heard one.”
I offer a smile that I’m certain doesn’t reach my eyes. “If you’re here for what I think you’re here for, I’m not interested.”
“We have unfinished . . . matters, though.”
“Actually, we don’t.” I stare at this woman who I would have given anything before to fuck. Anything. And I look at her now and find her attractive physically but nothing more.
“Callahan. We both know that’s not true,” she purrs and runs a fingertip over the edge of my shoulder.
I shrug away from her touch and stand from my seat. “Doesn’t this game ever get old?”
“What game is that?” And that’s when I see the truth. Sutton isn’t playing a game at all. Never has. She genuinely expects more for herself. As she ought to. Whereas Gia . . .
“The rich playgirl routine where you show up, cause a scene, and then expect to get fucked?”
Her smile returns despite the insult. “I wouldn’t throw stones in glass houses, Callahan.” She leans in and whispers, “Once upon a time those words used to define you too.”
