I disconnected the call. The shirt in my bag was cut up. I already had on a hospital gown and knew I’d stick out like a sore thumb walking down the hallways. Mentally, I blocked out the pain before easing my way out the room as normal as possible. No nurses were lingering around and not one sat at the nursing station. As quickly as I could, I headed to the elevator. I had to keep wiping my face because I was sweating so bad. Once I walked outside, the air was somewhat refreshing. The breeze felt good but not good enough. I waited for Tawanna exactly where I told her I would. I wasn’t waiting too long before she pulled up looking around for me. Quickly, I waved her down so she wouldn’t pass by me. I eased my way into the passenger seat and instructed her to take off.

“What the hell happened to you?” Her eyes were big. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” I lied. “I need you to take me to my brother's crib.”

I gave her the address and rode silently the whole ride. There wasn’t shit for me to talk about as a million thoughts invaded my mind. I needed to disappear fast, without a trace. The only person I could count on to help make that happen was my brother Roy. The thirty minute ride felt like three hours. Once Tawanna pulled into the driveway, I exhaled, glad to see that my brother was actually home.

“Go knock on the door and tell Roy I’m in the car.” I instructed her.

Within three minutes, Roy came out with a confused expression on his face.

“Damn nigga, what the fuck you done got yourself into?” He questioned.

“Help me get in the house.” I coughed trying to get out of the car.

He did as I asked, and I made sure to remind Tawanna that she hadn’t seen nor heard from me. She agreed and promised to keep it a secret. I stumbled inside the house and laid right across the couch.

“I need to disappear.”

“Nah, nigga, you need to tell me what the fuck is going on.” Roy folded his arms.

I sighed, taking several seconds to get myself together mentally and physically.

“I killed Ava and Savannah.”

Roy didn’t say anything as he pulled a blunt from behind his ear and sparked it. I wasn’t completely sure if they made it out alive. If they did, I’m sure the nurse would’ve said something.

“How?”

“I crashed my car near Seattle street, I think.” I confessed.

“Nigga, that was you?” He asked, shaking his head. “Traffic was backed up for hours, nigga. It was on the news and everything. Your car was unrecognizable, how the fuck you make it out alive?”

“I don’t know.” I sighed. “I know the cops are gonna be looking for me. I need to get the fuck out of town. When Ava people find out I’m behind the wreck and not dead, they coming for me too.”

Roy tried passing me the blunt but I declined. Shit, I could barely fucking breathe. I waited about forty five minutes for him to make a few calls and put some shit together before he helped me into his ride. He told me he had a spot out in the country where I could stay and he’d have someone come out to treat my injuries. That’s all I needed until I was healed enough to eventually move out of state, if not the country. Fuck all the bullshit. Fuck Ava. Fuck Kelcy. Fuck them kids. Fuck that white boy and everybody else. They could all die slowly if you’d ask me. I had no regrets and I only prayed that I got the job done right.

CHAPTER 34

Ethan Whitmore

My whole world came to a pause when Ace called to tell me Ava and Savannah were in a car wreck. Stuck in traffic, I was ten minutes away from her parents house when he hit me up. When he said Ava had to be transported to the hospital by helicopter, I knew shit was serious. When I pulled up to the scene, the fire fighters had to use the jaws of life to pull her and Savannah out. Thankfully, Savannah was taken by ambulance with a few cuts and bruises. The car was so mangled, it was by the grace of God that she even made it out okay.

As we got deeper into the conversation, I learned that Rob was behind it. Aja heard everything that was said because Ava secretly had her on the phone without his knowledge. She said all she could hear was Savannah crying while Rob and Ava argued. Had I been on my way when I was supposed to, none of this shit would’ve happened. Aja kept telling me it wasn’t my fault, but I couldn’t help but take part of the blame. Caught up, dealing with Carla’s stupid ass put a delay in my timing.

For the past seven days, I had been going back and forth to the hospital every day. The majority of my time was spent at Ava’s bedside, hoping and praying that she’d wake up. The doctors said there was still brain activity, which was good. Her vitals were doing well, but it was her legs that sustained the most damage. So far she’s had two surgeries. The doctors said it could take up to a year for her to fully heal or even walk again by herself. They said it was a miracle that she survived such trauma. I was thankful that she did. Mentally, I wasn’t in a position to take another major loss.

Every day, I would come in and talk to her. Whether she could actually hear me or not, I constantly told her how much I loved her. I’d play her favorite songs and read those freaky ass hood books she loved so much on Amazon. Aside from me, her parents were present every day, and so were Ace and Aja. It was kind of hard to hear Ava’s mom explain to Savannah what was going on with her.

I brought Zoie with me one time to spend a few hours. Julia, Duke, Stephanie, and Preston would show their faces every other day to check in. Julia would bring her flowers, and Stephanie would arrange them around the hospital room as if they were on display for a showcase.

For the last few hours, I had been posted up at Big Momma’s house. Ava’s mother had spent the night with her. She insisted that I go home and get some rest. I did, and I also went to pick up my princess, so we could spend a little time together. Big Momma had cooked for us, and now I was sitting with her while she watched Law & Order: Organized Crime. Zoie was in the room, messing around with her toys. I found myself constantly checking my phone and watching the time. I hated being away from Ava for too long.

“You’re doing it again.” Big Momma spoke.

“Doing what?” I glanced at her.

“Stressing yourself out.” She kept her eyes on the TV.
