Lainey chuckled. “Funny, I was just thinking how odd it was you didn’t have one. Normally, it wouldn’t be a problem, but you see this Alpha who’s kind of into me just fucked me until my whole body feels like Jell-O.”

“At least the man fucked you, right?” I pointed out with a smirk.

“That he did,” she agreed, her voice full of satisfaction and far more relaxed than when she joined me.

We made it work, and after about ten minutes, Lainey was able to manage on her own. Not that I let her get that far, feeling the overprotective urge to keep my hands on her hips. The thought of her slipping and falling because of something I’d done was my worst nightmare. When Lainey finished showering, I grabbed the towel I’d draped over the door handle and wrapped her up before setting her on the bathroom counter.

“Stay right there. I’ll be quick,” I instructed, pointing a warning finger at her.

“Yes, sir,” Lainey answered, giving me a mock salute.

Three minutes later, I had a towel wrapped around my hips and combed through Lainey’s hair as she sat on my bed. “I don’t have a blow dryer in my room, but I’m pretty sure Quin does,” I commented.

“There’s one up in my bathroom,” she pointed out. “I have to go back up there to get my clothes as it is.”

That got me thinking. “The apartment here was provided by the Syndicate, right?”

“Yeah, along with everything in it. I’ll have to hire someone to pack up all my shit and ship it here along with getting a new phone, bank cards, ID… basically replacing everything that the Syndicate took from me. Well, and transferring things to make it legit, but I’m not sure what to do about my birth certificate,” she mused aloud as she processed what it meant to put down roots. “I might have burned that when I left here fourteen years ago.”

“That’s easy. I can get whatever you need with the right information,” I told her. “Now head up and get dressed. We’re going to stop by a pharmacy along the way.”

The speed at which her head snapped around to look at me made me flinch. “What?”

“We’re going to get you a pregnancy test, maybe a whole box of them so you can keep checking over the next few days. None of us are gonna be able to relax until we get a straight answer to this, and I’d rather not have you go to the hospital if we don’t need to.” I raised a hand to stop her argument. “It has nothing to do with not wanting people to know about us, I just don’t want to hand the Syndicate information they don’t need to know about you right now. Until I truly believe they will leave you alone, we’re not going to put you at any unnecessary risk.”

She snapped her mouth closed and nodded. “Okay, that makes sense.”

I cupped her face and kissed her tenderly. “Now go so I can think straight. Having you in just a towel on my bed makes it incredibly hard not to fuck you again, which we don’t have time for.”

A wide grin spread across her face as she slid off the bed, dropping the towel on the floor. “Well, if the towel’s the problem here, why didn’t you say so?”

“Oh-ho-ho, you deliciously naughty vixen,” I muttered, dropping my head into my hands so I didn’t watch that perfect round ass walk out of my room.

“Keri—” I heard Quintin start to say before his words were cut off. “Never mind, I no longer need to ask my question. I’ll see you downstairs when you’re ready.”

Not bothering to answer, knowing he wasn’t there anymore, I walked into my closet and got dressed. My dick was hard once more, eager to please Lainey in any way she wanted.

“Sorry, buddy, we actually have something more important to take care of right now,” I apologized to my cock as I zipped it away in my jeans, the only thing that wouldn’t show my hard-on. At least, I hoped it wouldn’t. “This woman is going to be the best kind of trouble, isn’t she?”

Who would have guessed how hard it would be to keep three Alpha males in the car while you ran in to get a pregnancy test? None of them wanted to let me out of their sight, and I got it, I really did. However, they also needed to understand that even if I were going to be part of this family, I wouldn’t give up my independence. Sure, at the moment, things were dicey with the Syndicate and Reuben having the code, but I could handle going into a store.

“You really should have three of these,” the woman at the register commented. “Two for the first time you check, then save the third one for a few days later. Unless you’re just checking before you go to a clinic to have your blood tested.”

I hesitated, then darted back to the shelf and grabbed a third to be safe.

“First time?” she inquired, giving me a sympathetic look. “Trust me, I’ve seen that look on many a woman’s face. Believe me when I tell you that you’ll feel better once you know for sure. The worst part of it all is the guessing because it lets your mind spiral out of control. You’re doing the right thing, knowledge is power, and once you have all the facts, you can make the best choice for your life. Oh, and if the man or men are still in the picture, don’t you fucking dare let them pressure you one way or the other. They’re not the ones who have to grow the damn thing and suffer with the results for the rest of your life.”

Unsure how to even respond to all that, I simply smiled. “Thank you, that’s all logical advice to keep in mind.”

“I’ve got two kids of my own, and I wish someone would have been that honest with me for the first one. Don’t get me wrong, I love the hell out of that girl, and I’m glad I kept her, but her father, the man who convinced me to keep the baby, split after three months of no sleep. Jackass couldn’t handle it. Well, I say good riddance. As it turns out, he made room for the right man to come into my life who loved me and my daughter,” the cashier shared. “All that to say things around you can change, but you’ll forever be that child’s mother. If you don’t want that job, then accept it and deal with things before it’s gone too far.”

Taking the bag, I gave her a shaky smile and walked numbly out of the store. For the moment, I thought I knew what I wanted to do, but now after hearing her talk, I was left second-guessing myself. Kerian pulled the car up the moment I stepped out, and I climbed into the passenger seat, shaking off the turmoil the woman left me in. Knowledge is power. Once I have an answer, I’ll know what I’m dealing with and can make a choice one way or another.

“You okay?” Kerian asked, looking at me with a slight wrinkle between his brows.
