Thank fuck it’s a man. If it had been another woman, I’d have managed, but knowing all I had to do was convince a man to help me was so much easier. Annabeth returned with a gentleman in the typical white lab coat with his badge hanging off his pocket, but something seemed off about it.
“This is the pharmacist,” Annabeth said, gesturing to the man as she glanced at his name. “Dr. Roberts.”
Her hesitation had me thinking this wasn’t the normal pharmacist. He took one look at me with a disgusting grin that I’m sure he thought would be charming. “How can I help?”
“I need to get a dose of Intervestron,” I explained. “Annabeth was asking for the prescription, but I only have the record from the pharmacy that ran out of it. Will you honor it?” Seeing how this man was already eye fucking me, I didn’t bother laying on the dramatics or batting my lashes. It was obvious this idiot was already in the bag.
“Of course, of course,” he assured me. “Let me see the prescription, and I’ll get it pulled together.”
Handing over my phone, he looked over it and handed it back. “Give me a few minutes, and I’ll call you back to administer it.”
Both Annabeth and I looked at him, confused by that statement.
“Aah… I’m more than comfortable doing it myself,” I explained.
Dr. Roberts nodded with that creepy smile and walked away without saying a word. I looked at Annabeth, who was frowning, staring after the man. “I’m really sorry about him. Our normal pharmacist is on maternity leave, and he’s been the replacement while she’s gone. The man is odd but does decent work.”
“As long as I get the medication, that’s all I care about. I need to grab something really quick, then I’ll come back to settle the bill,” I commented as I headed off to find a can of hairspray.
It was at this moment I realized the only money I had was either the company card from Halstead or the card from the Syndicate. Something told me that the Syndicate wouldn’t be happy with what I was trying to do and might see it as retaliation or something equally unpleasant. My only choice was to pretend I used the Enigma card by accident and have them take it out of my paycheck.
I’d been a little worried as Annabeth swiped the card for the medication since some company cards have certain categories blocked so people couldn’t do what I had. Fingers crossed behind my back as I waited, holding my breath. I all but sagged in relief at the confirmation trill and receipt being printed.
“Perfect timing,” Dr. Roberts announced as he walked back up. “I’ve got it all situated, so if you come around to the clinic door, I’ll let you back.”
Everything in me screamed not to do this, but I was desperate, and no good choices happened when you were desperate. He led me to a small barren exam room where the shot was ready and waiting to be used. Thankfully, he put on gloves without me having to ask and sat on the short-wheeled stool.
“If you’ll undress from the waist down and bend over the exam table, I’ll get this taken care of,” Dr. Roberts instructed.
“You want me to do what now?” I demanded.
“Undress and bend over,” he reiterated. “The shot has to go in your buttocks. Surely, this isn’t the first time you’ve had this medication?”
“Like I said before, I typically do it myself,” I shot back. “If you give me the room, I’ll have it done in two seconds.”
“While you might have been able to do that before, a new law was passed, and now only medical personnel can administer the medication,” he explained, giving me this look like I was a petulant child.
Stepping up to him, I snatched his name badge off his jacket and looked at it more closely. “This is shit work.”
“Give me that back, or I’ll have you arrested for assault,” he yelled, shooting to his feet.
With the tip of my nail, I picked at the corner of the badge feeling the added layer of adhesive and got under it enough to peel back the whole layer. “Would you look at that… it seems the real Dr. Tarance Roberts is not only sixty years old but also a black man,” I shared, flashing him the photo. “Neither of which you are unless you’re going to try and tell me he stole your badge first? If he did, then I need to find out who his contact is because damn, this looks fucking perfect, almost as if it’s the real deal.”
“Who the fuck are you?” Dr. Roberts liar-liar-pants-on-fire blustered.
Tucking the badge in his pocket over his heart, I patted it roughly. “I’m the person who knows your dirty little secret. So I suggest you walk out of this exam room, let me give myself the shot, and forget we ever saw each other.”
He blinked at me, almost dumbfounded. “That’s it? You’re just going to let me go?”
“Is there a reason I shouldn’t? Did you fuck with the medication or switch it out for something else to drug me?” I questioned, crossing my arms and pinning him with my gaze.
Shaking his head vigorously, he backed up. “N-no,” he stuttered. “It’s just the suppressant like you were prescribed.”
“Excellent, now get the fuck out of this room before I change my mind,” I ordered.
That might have been the fastest he’d ever moved in his life, but dear Robby bolted out of the exam room. “Fucking perv, making women undress and bend over,” I muttered as I grabbed the syringe, yanked off the cap with my teeth, and injected it into my bicep, the other alternative place you can administer the drug.
Dropping the used item into the appropriate container, I collected my purse and hurried out of the store. Glancing at my watch, I cursed under my breath. I had ten minutes to get back, and it was going to be close.
