Chapter thirty
The following week flew by as we worked with the council to train their men, strategize with their military leaders, and coordinate Oscad’s involvement. It was like watching them assemble a massive puzzle of people, placing each piece where they would be most effective.
During the day, I trained with all the other soldiers building on the foundation my guys had started. This was it, and I needed to absorb everything I could to ensure I would be an asset. Hand-to-hand training was the hardest, not because I couldn’t pick up the moves, but because I wasn’t allowed to spar with anyone that wasn’t part of my pack. The first day I ended up with a black eye, not moving fast enough to dodge the hit, and I thought Lucian and Victor were going to kill the poor man. After some incredibly heated words between the instructor and my guys, it was determined I could do everything that didn’t involve another person.
That didn’t mean I was off the hook. Victor and Sorin made sure I had early morning training with them before I met up with the rest. In a way, getting such one-on-one time with an instructor was an advantage, and I progressed quickly enough. Shooting became easy as I gained more confidence with my gun, moving through an obstacle course to give more real-situation experience. With the guys focusing on strategy and plotting, I didn’t get to see them as much, so I was thankful for the purpose training gave me.
Every night we always made sure to have dinner together as we did back on base. The council provided us with a house to use during our time here, giving us a space to call our own for the time being. It was the first time since we bonded that I felt like a real family living under the same roof. I rotated which room and guys I slept with at night since we couldn’t all be together. It’s not that I didn’t love how we spent time as a pack, but it was nice to get some time to focus on one or two of them at a time. For all we’ve experienced together, we were still learning about each other on a deeper level. This was something we genuinely needed before the battle began. For once it started, there wouldn’t be time for relaxed, intimate moments. So we indulged while we could.
“Dani-girl,” Sorin whispered as he ran his fingers over the naked skin of my back. “It’s time. We head out in an hour.”
Groaning, I turned to look at him. “You have to be kidding me. I feel like I just fell asleep two seconds ago.”
“I waited as long as I could so you could get a full five hours of sleep,” he said with a smirk. “I’ll admit I might have gotten a little carried away last night.”
“A little?” I squeaked.
Leaning down, he caught my pouting lips in a fierce kiss. “What can I say, you’re just irresistible, and who knows when any of us will have enough time to get that many orgasms out of you.”
“No one should get ten orgasms on a regular basis. It would fry their brain,” I muttered, tossing back the covers. “If I’m too fucking sore to walk all day, I’m going to tell everyone it’s your fault.”
“Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but a threat like that isn’t a deterrent,” Victor commented from the doorway. “In fact, I would fucking love for you to tell everyone what we managed to get out of you last night.”
“We know the neighbors are well aware of what happened in this room last night,” Lucian chuckled. “Gotta say, those were some rather inventive moves.”
“Right, I read about them in a book once and thought it would be interesting to see if you could really pull it off,” Victor shared with a giant grin on his face. “Let’s go, Little Spark. We have coffee and breakfast waiting for you. If you don’t eat it in the next ten minutes, you’re gonna be waiting until lunch.”
“What? Sorin said I had an hour?” I argued, grabbing clothes and yanking them on.
“Oh, that’s till we leave. There’s still a shit ton to do, Dani-girl,” Sorin corrected.
Tugging my shirt over my head, I glared at them. “I hate you all.”
“Not what you said last night,” Victor tossed over his shoulder as he left the room.
Finished getting dressed, I wandered into the kitchen where Cris was sitting at the table looking over various lists of supplies he was coordinating. The council appointed him the head medic for this whole thing since he was the best-trained person and had the skills. As I walked by, his arm shot out, pulling me to sit on his lap.
“You’re not even going to say good morning?” he asked, giving me puppy dog eyes.
Smiling, I pressed a quick kiss to his lips. “You looked busy, I didn't want to disturb you.”
“Sweetheart, I’m never too busy for you,” he countered. “You need something from me, or you just want a hug, kiss, or my attention. You have it. All you need to do is ask, understand?”
I nodded, but he caught my chin and frowned.
“I’m gonna need you to say it, so I know you believe me,” Cris instructed.
“If I need you for any reason, I will make sure to ask,” I said, grinning at him. “This whole putting you in charge thing brings out the Alpha side of you. I’m not sure I’m convinced you're truly a Beta when you get all broody.”
He leaned down and brushed his nose along mine. “Trust me, if I were really an Alpha, you’d know the second I knotted that perfect pussy of yours. Besides, just because I’m a Beta doesn’t mean I need to be a passive person all the time. In fact, there is this Omega I know who can be incredibly bossy. It’s so unlike any other sweet, demure Omega I’ve ever met,” he teased, giving me a searing kiss that left me breathless.
“Hey now, she needs to eat. So you’re gonna need to let her come up for air,” Victor interjected. “Come on, Little Spark, I’m gonna have you sit over here so you don’t get distracted.”
Sliding off Cris’s lap, I sat where Victor dragged out the chair and wasted no time in digging in. Today was going to be a long, hard day, and we all knew it. We needed to get out of the mountains and to the meeting point further West, where the Oscadians would await us. We’d stay the night there and head out before first light to the first Northern military base run by a heavy-hitting supporter of General Rasvan.
The impact of this first attack needed to be enough to draw the general’s attention, forcing him to send his personal military out of Stalhold City. Once we got word from the spies already in place there that the majority of the soldiers were gone, our unit would break off and meet a second group of Oscadians who would help us take the city. The battle between the rebels and the bases that supported the General needed to continue as we made our way to the city keeping all the attention on them. It was not easy to hide hundreds of soldiers when there was no cover from nature or buildings. General Rasvan had it all removed to ensure that if there was an attack, he would immediately know about it. However, we planned to use that in hopes we could turn the citizens against their leader to protect themselves.
“Don’t forget to chew, Wildflower,” Petru reminded me as he dropped a kiss on my head.
