“So much for wanting to get used to a life with criminals,” I muttered to Jaxson.

He just grunted and chased after her when she started to head for the elevator. Taking that as my cue to check in with my own men, I headed back into the office. “What are we celebrating?”

Wes twirled in his chair and grinned at me. “Well, shortcake, it seems you were absolutely right, and they were trying to get me to follow the trail of breadcrumbs they set out for me all the way to setting off the EMP that would have fried the whole system. Not just on this floor but the entire building, leaving nothing to chance.”

“So I wasn’t totally lying to Harper when I said a bomb was going to go off. It’s just not one that would have killed a human,” I said as I settled my hands on my hips. “Serves her right for not saying anything to any of us that she was coming.”

“Yeah, it would have fried anything with technology like our phones and shit but wouldn’t kill us,” Wes agreed. “Now that I know what to look out for, it’s easier to navigate. Give me about a half hour, and I’ll dump all the information I can find into one of my offshore servers so I can go through it easier later.”

Looking around, I noticed Cam wasn’t back, and I didn’t see him in the hall either. “Do you need me for anything right now?”

Wes looked up from the screen, thinking, then shook his head. “You still have a phone?”

“Yup, I’m gonna go find where Cam wandered off to,” I called out as I exited the room, but of course, I wasn’t going alone. “So it’s your turn to babysit me, pres?”

“Like I need a reason to stare at your ass,” Eagle answered with a chuckle. “What can I say? I was getting lonely and wanted to spend time with my wife.”

I glanced at him over my shoulder with a smirk. “You fucking love you can call me that, don’t you?”

“Might just be my favorite word right now,” Eagle answered, a shit-eating grin on his face. “Wife, wifey, old lady, better half, queen of my heart… I could go on for days.”

“Oh God, please don’t.” I groaned. “I’ll never be able to remember my name at this point since none of you use it unless I’m in fucking trouble.”

“That’s because the names we gave you are much better than your real name. Just like our road names are the ones we go by now unless we’re in fucking trouble,” Eagle pointed out.

Shaking my head, I peered into all the offices and meeting rooms but couldn’t find him. Had he left the floor altogether? Why would he need to do that without saying anything?

“Hey, did you see which way Cam went when he stepped out?” I asked Eagle.

He reached out and did the, give me motion. Unsure of what he wanted, I placed my hand in his, making him smile as he pulled me to his chest. “While I love that’s what you think I wanted, if you hand me back my phone, I can tell you where he is.”

“It’s in my back pocket if you want to get it yourself,” I shared, and a possessive glint flickered in his eyes.

He wrapped his arms around me and let his hand trail down my spine until they rounded my ass. Giving both cheeks a good grope, he found which pocket held his phone. Dipping his head, he caught my lips as he slid the phone out and kneaded my ass with his free hand, growling with pleasure. “Fuck, little hellcat, I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of you for as long as we live.”

“I used to think lines like that were pure shit, but now I’m not so sure,” I responded as I ran the tip of my nose along his. “Let’s find my wayward husband so I can scold him for leaving without saying a word for a change. You know, just to see what it’s like on the other side of things. I’m also assuming you have this tracker on all your phones so no matter whose phone I take, you’ll be able to find me?”

“Can’t blame us for keeping our woman safe, now can you?” Eagle challenged as he handed the phone to me. “Looks like he’s in the lobby.”

“Damn, Wes got this shit to be really precise, didn’t he?” I said, impressed, as we headed for the elevators. “Could he be meeting someone? You don’t think the FBI would want in on this part of things, do you?”

Eagle shrugged. “Guess we can go ask him.”

Chapter 9

Dax

Using Eagle’s phone, I shot a text to the others that we were heading down to the lobby to meet up with Cam. I wouldn’t want them scrambling to find me if shit hit the fan again. When we stepped out, it was easy to spot Cam since no one else was in the lobby. It seems Tommaso made good on his job and got everyone out of the building. Cam was talking to an older man in a suit, hand tucked casually in his pockets, but something about him told me he wasn’t as mellow as he was trying to be.

“You think you can just pull a stunt like that, and I’ll let you walk away? This whole task force was your idea, and now you want to drop it all and move to the other side?” the man demanded.

Cam just stared at the man, his arms crossed as he leaned slightly away like he didn’t want to be grabbed. This had me on high alert because Cam wasn’t a man who let anyone fuck with him. My black knight might not be the best hand-to-hand fighter out of all of us, but he could do some serious damage. More so after all the training we’d done together getting ready for this trip.

Not caring that I was invading their conversation, I stepped up to Cam and wrapped an arm around his waist. Instantly, he dropped his arms and settled one over my shoulder as he kissed the top of my head. “Dax, this is Deputy Assistant Director Simon Maxwell. Sir, this is my wife, Dax Blackmore,” Cam introduced, his voice cool and detached, telling me he didn’t like this man at all.

Reaching out a hand, I smiled. “Nice to meet you.”

Simon just looked at me then to Cam and back again. “I’m sorry, did he say you’re his wife?”
