“Let’s go.” She walked out of the room, and I followed, ignoring the eyes on my back.
I had a lot of questions. So many, I wasn’t sure where to start.
After we loaded into the elevator, I opened my mouth to speak, but Enzo shook his head.
Okay, got it. Keeping my mouth shut until we’re gone.
We loaded into two cars, Enzo and I in one. Antonia got into the other, glaring daggers at Rafael, who held the door open for her with a serene smile.
Once the door was shut and the car started moving, I turned to Enzo.
“How long?” I asked.
“Can you be more specific?” He pulled out his phone, thumbs typing away.
“How long have you been following Charles?” I clarified my question. One picture, I noticed, was taken months ago, around Christmas.
“We met two years ago,” he said, so nonchalantly that the words took a second to penetrate my brain.
Two years ago, I'd told him to get lost. He mentioned it before, but I still struggled to understand the depth of how long he worked to get me exactly where I was.
He didn’t even hide it. He practically shoved it in my face. My mind spun, trying to wrap my head around the idea that he’d been doing this for months before we were anything. I wanted to be angry, maybe a little violated at how thoroughly he’d done his research on my life, but instead all I felt was relief.
I had been making notes but had yet to come up with a plan to remove Charles completely from our lives. There were steps, and Minnie complicated that process. Yet, this was the path forward. Enzo made what would’ve been another emotional, hellish experience smooth and easy.
“How did you get Antonia here? I went to her years ago, and she turned me down,” I said.
“I didn’t. Rafael did. I don’t question how he gets things done; I just appreciate that it gives me the results I need.” Enzo shrugged and pulled me close. “Are you okay?”
“Yes. I took the rose-colored glasses off a long time ago when it came to him.” It still stung that he chose to spend his time partying and doing nothing rather than spending it with our daughter.
“It’s his loss,” Enzo said. He kissed my forehead. “And his loss is my gain.”
We pulled up to his office building. I’d been here before, dropping off his suits to his secretary. It was a tactical decision for me. I didn’t want to know what I was missing, what I thought I’d never have the chance to experience.
Enzo swiped his key card, and we went up the elevator to the executive floor. He nodded to his secretary, an older woman, who smiled at us as we walked past her and into his office.
Rafael and Antonia were waiting for us. Rafael was lounging on the couch, taking up as much room as he could.
Antonia pushed herself into the corner of the couch, annoyed expression on her face as she furiously on her laptop. I sat across from her, nerves twisting my stomach.
“Good, you’re here,” she said. “Let’s get a game plan together.”
“Good, you didn’t start without me.” Sly bounded in. He flashed a flirty smile at Antonia, who grimaced.
“Tony, it’s good to see you.” He winked. Antonia gagged, and I had to stifle a laugh.
“I could’ve gone the rest of my life without ever seeing you again, Sylvester,” Antonia said, rolling her eyes and focusing on me. “If you’re done with your theatrics, I’d like to get to work.”
“Please. You know how I love to watch you work.” Sly sat in the chair next to me, never taking his eyes off her.
She sighed and turned to me. “Charles Clearwart is an asshole. How you managed to stay with him for as long as you did is a testament to your patience. As for your case, there are valid violations of the custody agreement on your part, which I highlighted in yellow.” She handed me a folder.
I opened it and flipped through the pages. There were a few sections that were highlighted in yellow, most of what I expected; a few I didn’t. There were twice as many orange-highlighted sections, hitting almost every bullet point within the document.
“The orange highlight is Charles?” I asked.
“Yes. I have verified proof of each breach in the contract. Multiple examples in some cases. I’ve also had the opportunity to look at the rules around his trust fund.” She handed me another folder.
