I rolled my eyes and set down my phone.
“Victor. You’re being ridiculous.” It was my turn to sigh. “Fight for your players. Lunch next week. I have to run.”
Victor bid me goodbye, and we hung up. He wasn’t a good agent to begin with, but he was easy to make a trade with, so I kept our professional relationship friendly.
“Lora,” I called out. A moment later, my assistant was at my door. “I’m going to run out for a coffee.”
“I can do that, Sloane.” She quickly turned to start walking to her desk.
I had already grabbed my purse and was headed toward the door by the time she looked up again.
“I just need a break, and so do you,” I said from the elevator, holding the door for her.
“Oh. Okay.” She clambered inside beside me, and we rode to the first floor.
“Are you okay?” she asked gently.
I pulled her into a one-armed hug. “We’re going to be fine. We aren’t like the rest, remember?”
She nodded and smiled. “We’re the best team a player could have.”
We exchanged another smile and went our separate ways.
Chapter 6
Seere
Sloane crossed the street wearing a sexy pencil skirt and loose-fitting blouse. Lace from something sexy she had on underneath peeked behind the buttons she had undone. I wondered if she’d worn it just for me.
Her eyes found me in an instant.
I held up my hand and dipped my fingers to the seat across from mine. I’d already ordered for her.
She rolled her shoulders back, building herself up, then came to sit at the table with me.
“I’m here. What do you want?”
I nudged the saucer holding her cup closer to her. “It’s lovely to see you too, little flame. Vanilla latte with whole milk and one sugar. Low foam. With whip.”
She perked a brow at me and eyed the drink.
“We’re in public. I didn’t roofie it,” I added.
“Wouldn’t put it past you to try,” she quipped but picked up the mug and took a sip.
Her lip dipped into the frothed milk, covering the ruby lipstick with a lickable layer of bubbles. She swiped her tongue across them slowly, aware of my eyes.
“Thanks.” She placed her cup on its saucer and crossed her arms. “Tell me why you followed me on the boat last night and why you’re sitting in a café across the street from my office.”
“You’re my favorite toy, and when I want to see what is mine, I will do so,” I said simply.
“Why is Ben calling all my clients?” she shot back.
“I wouldn’t know.”
“Is that right?”
I nodded.
