“Could be a fracture, or a bad sprain.”

“Well, which is it?” he asked.

“Can’t say for sure without an x-ray.”

“No,” Kate said quickly.

Roman ground his teeth. Curiosity grew. She was clearly in hiding from the authorities.

“We can do it anonymously, if necessary,” he said. Her eyes shifted to his, emotions in their depths.

“You don’t have to do this. I’m grateful for your help—”

His eyes bore into hers, intention in every line of his body.

“Can she eat?” he asked, turning his attention to Garrett.

“If she feels like it.”

“What about drinking?”

“Water’s fine. No alcohol or caffeine.”

Roman nodded once. “What else?”

“Just keep an eye on her. If she vomits, let me know. Otherwise, I’ll reassess in the morning.”

That got Kate’s attention. “In the morning?”

“Yes. Tomorrow.”

“I’m not staying here overnight.”

Roman’s patience was wearing thin. There was independence, and then, there was stupidity. “Where else would you like to go?” he asked, crossing his arms and levelling his gaze at her. “You can’t walk, you may be concussed.”

“He just said I was fine.”

“He said you seem okay right now. You need monitoring.”

He could see panic in her face. He expelled a frustrated breath.

“Listen,” he crouched down once more, ignoring the protective surge inside his body. “I’m offering you a safe place to sleep, and medical care that’s outside of the hospital system. You’d be a fool to walk away after what you’ve been through.”

She stared up at him, a plea in her eyes that he somehow instinctively understood.

“It’s okay,” he reiterated. “You’re safe.”

And he meant that, with all his heart. He only wished he could have given the same thing to his sister when she’d needed it most.

Chapter Two

“I CAN WALK,” SHE said, though inwardly doubted whether that was true. But there was something about the way he moved to lift her so easily, so confidently, that unnerved her. Not because she didn’t feel safe with him, but rather, because she did.

Safe and protected.

And like she had support, for the first time in a long time.

“Liar,” he responded, tone flat. His voice was thick and deep, gruff, giving some kind of tortured vigilante vibe even when she had no reason to cast him as a dark superhero in her mind.
