“Sorry, of course. I should know better. I do use words for a living. So, Poppy of two jobs, do you ever get a day off?”

“Rarely.”

“Lunch break?”

“Half an hour. Usually at noon.”

“Can I bring you lunch?”

“I guess that would be okay.”

“Text me the address. I’ll see you tomorrow. Any allergies I should know about?”

“Only to posers.”

“You’ve got nothing to worry about, then. Sweet dreams.”

“You too.”

“Oh, mine will be,” he crooned, his voice like velvet.

I hung up, butterflies in my stomach, all thoughts of sleep suddenly gone. I wondered if he’d really show tomorrow or if the whole night had been a dream. As I got ready for bed, I told myself not to expect too much. I’d been disappointed too many times before. Besides, I hadn’t come to New York to fall in love. I’d come to get famous. Or at least known in the art world. But as my head hit the pillow all I could think about was Bennett’s handsome face.

Savannah

Savannah waited for him to answer, her head pounding from too much wine and her stomach in knots. She wasn’t used to drinking, but she’d gotten carried away last night. Why had she fallen into bed with him so quickly? It was stupid, stupid! Now he would go back to his country estate, and she’d be left with nothing but memories. She had played this all wrong. She had to do something, but what? She could at least try to salvage her dignity.

“I should head back to my room. I promised a friend I’d meet him for coffee at ten. Need to shower and change.”

She started to get up and he put a hand on her arm. “Don’t go yet.”

She leaned in to kiss him, then got up before he could stop her. “Wish I could stay. Safe travels home.”

He got out of bed and stood in front of her.

“I’m not in a hurry. In fact, I was thinking of sticking around for a while.”

She was speechless as relief flooded her.

He filled the silence. “This wasn’t a one-night thing for me. Was it for you?”

“No. It’s crazy but I feel like you really get me. It’s like we’ve known each other forever. I can’t remember ever feeling this way before.”

A look passed quickly over his face, and she felt her stomach plummet. Shit. Why did she always go too far?

“I’m starving, shall we order some breakfast?” he said.

She forced a smile and got up, slipping into a robe.

Bennett ordered room service for them. Savannah walked over to the window, looking out at the city.

She made her tone casual. “Do you miss living here?”

“Not really. I like my privacy, my space. I’ve done my stint in the city. I’d love to bring you to my house in Bedford. I think you’d love it.”

“Tell me about it.”
