Police officers came into the gym eying me as if I was a murder suspect. I looked at my clothes and held back a snarky comment. Because I could admit that maybe, I did in fact look like a murder suspect. I could fit in with my mob family right now.
I wanted to wince knowing I’d ruined the clothes Jarchi bought me. The hissing was at an all time high when Lisa spoke. I snapped at her annoying attention seeking bitch ass. Keaton’s ex left her sister to die or get rabies and die. There was really no way around that. Lisa was an awful horrific bitch.
The officer asked me questions. I figured he didn’t know the name of the lacrosse stick, so I just told him I beat off the wolf with it. I couldn’t tell him I turned one of those wolves into my puppet. That was weird, and I obviously misunderstood.
My emotions were heightened and clearly crazy. Nope. I couldn’t convince my mind I was crazy this time, even though the thought hurt. Somehow, that wolf became mine to command. I looked in his eyes, and he did what I asked him to do. That was weird.
Lisa was denying everything because that’s the type of person she was. I wanted to gloat over the fact that Keaton wasn’t looking at her. He was looking at me with pleading eyes filled with concern. Then I saw her arms still wrapped around him and was furious all over again. Mostly at myself for not seeing exactly how this would play out.
May stepped in while Keaton and I argued. It felt like I was being repeatedly stabbed in the chest. My heart was bleeding, and no one noticed. Keaton wanted to come with me. As if. At the same time, I felt like if he didn’t come, I wouldn’t be able to function.
I left and Keaton followed me. That was new, he followed. Maybe he wasn’t like everyone else. No, Odette. No more hope. You live a lonely life and that’s that. I was supposed to be meeting Keaton, and instead he was with Lisa.
It felt like my heart shattered thinking about the embrace I found them in. We just needed space. Well, I needed space. We were going warp speed ahead in this relationship. Keaton was going to destroy me if I let this continue.
Did that stop him from arguing with me? No, Keaton looked like I was the one ripping his heart out when he’d already done that to me. Why was he being like this? I had screamed for help, but he didn’t come. Keaton was too busy with Lisa. He had to have heard me, and he chose Lisa.
I’d see him Monday and promptly left my heart behind me in the hallway as I walked out of the school. The police officer was speaking to me, but I stared at him, uncomprehending. Didn’t he understand that my heart was back in that hallway?
Someone put their hand on me, but that didn’t mean much to me considering the hand it wasn’t Keaton’s. I realized May was talking to the police officer. Now, the paramedic was speaking to me. I blinked several times while the song was sadly humming her tune. It fit perfectly with my mood.
The paramedic gently said, “Miss Karlton, can you tell me if you’re injured?” I frowned admitting, “I’m sure I got cut by some glass. I crawled out of a broken window after I was locked in by a psychotic mean bitch that locked me inside.”
I was certain I heard more than a few snickers. The paramedic fought as smile as he checked me over. He announced, “I don’t see any cuts.” That was impossible. My head pounded with pain and the alternative came to me.
I guess my clothes could’ve protected me. I was sure I cut my arm though. I looked at it only to discover the paramedic was right. May quickly said, “Your shirt is ripped, the glass must have just got the sleeve.” She was obviously right since I had no cuts.
The police officer cleared his throat. The paramedic said, “She’s in shock, but she’s not physically injured.” I declared, “You need to call animal control. Something was wrong with those wolves. Their eyes were red, and I think they have rabies. It’s pure luck the two students didn’t get bitten by them, but you can’t have those wolves running around here unchecked.”
May snorted but I wasn’t sure what was funny about that, I was serious. Immy ran up with both her dads who studied me too. I was the freak show today, I guess. Yay me. The song was so sad I wanted to curl up in a ball.
Immy slammed into me saying, “Oh thank god you’re alright.” The cop looked at her dad, Matt, and said, “This student says she fought them off with a lacrosse stick. The were wolves with rabies.” I frowned, “You don’t have to say it like you don’t believe me. Their eyes were red, something is clearly wrong with them.”
I added, “As far as my weapon, I didn’t think you’d know it was called a crosse. So, I called it a lacrosse stick. Ok? I hit them with it and then one of them turned on the others. Three of limped off before the other one dragged them. I’m pretty sure they are dead over there. Tests need to be run on them. Then you’ll know they have rabies or something, but it’s definitely something.”
Matt asked, “One of them turned on the others?” I nodded, “Yeah, then the rest ran off to get away from that one.” Matt frowned. The police officer said, “So, that’s why they ran. One turned on them.” I frowned, “I hit several of them before that happened.”
I also made it happen, somehow. I was pretty sure of that anyway. Hopefully, Isla didn’t tell them that. The police officer asked me, “What aren’t you saying?” I snorted, “That Lisa Kipner is a psychotic whack job who locked me in a supply closet hoping I would freeze to death after she dumped water on me.”
I waved my arm, “She’s a hairs breath away from being a murderer. I’m pretty sure locking me in the closet hoping I froze to death makes her an attempted murderer. Then she left her little sister, WHOM SHE HAS THREATENED, to die. Seems odd but I don’t have a badge to investigate such things. I just want to go home.”
I burst into tears. Immy’s other dad, Ted, said, “I’ll take Katie and Immy to Katie’s apartment. This girl has clearly been traumatized.” The police officer said, “I understand that, but we need to know what happened.”
I said, “I told you what happened. Lisa threatened to beat her sister, then wolves MAGICALLY showed up to try and off the two people Lisa can’t control anymore. Oh, and she tried to kill me because I went a date with her ex. Yet here you stand saying you don’t know what happened. Might I suggest speaking with that duplicitous psychopath!”
Immy snickered out a laugh. Matt cleared his throat, “Katie did give you her statement and she’s a minor without a parent or guardian present.” The police officer countered, “We could call her parents.” I didn’t want to deal with my mother.
I gave him a thumbs up sarcastically saying, “Best of luck with that. Truly, let me know if you find my mother’s number.” Immy jumped in, “Well, Daddy Ted said she’s done talking so she’s done. Right, Daddy Matt?”
Matt lovingly said, “Right, Immy.” The cop looked at Matt then practically bared his neck to him. What the hell? The cop agreed, “Of course. Go on, Miss Karlton. Thank you for your time.” Today was weird and people were actually crazy.
Immy and May guided me to the car. Ted offered, “If you give me your mom’s number, I’ll call her.” I shrugged, “You’d probably rather speak to her boyfriend, but I don’t have her number. Besides, my mom would just be annoyed. It’s best to leave her on her trip. If she has to come home because of me, she might kill me.” Ted frowned.
Immy said, “We’ve got her, dad.” Ted sighed, “As a parent, I’d want to know.” I laughed humorlessly, “My mom would not. I promise she’d only be mad at me and probably make us move again. That’s what she does when I embarrass her.”
Immy shrieked, “No, Katie can’t leave! Daddy Ted, please don’t call her mom!” Ted sighed, “Apparently, I can’t. Katie doesn’t have her number.” The further we got away from the school, from Keaton, the more despondent I became. I missed him. This was beyond pathetic.
Kenneth came out to the car and picked me up. I whispered, “I’m ok.” Kenneth disagreed, “You do not look ok, Miss Karlton.” He asked Ted, “Where is Keaton?” I started sobbing, “Probably with Lisa.” Everyone was startled by my clear overreaction I couldn’t stop.
