Sienna

It’s the day of my funeral, and my period is about to show up.

Great way to begin the worst day of my life…

I throw a pillow over my face and try not to cry. Feeling shame while you’ve got cramps is not a good combo. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

And I have a lot of those floating around at the moment.

I glance at my phone on the nightstand and feel a fresh wave of shame rip through my gut. My nutritionist will be happy to know that I’ll be fasting from this point forward. I have no appetite for food whatsoever.

“Sienna,” calls a deep voice from outside my door.

“Leave me alone,” I groan, clutching my stomach as the cramps kick into overdrive.

“You need to eat something.”

“I can’t.”

The door opens a little, and I see Eli peeking into the room. “Yes, you can.”

“Easy for you to say. Let’s post your bare ass all over social media and see how you like it.”

“The guy is gone,” reassures Eli. “And he won’t be coming back.”

I throw my head back into the pillow, focusing my attention on Eli. “He might be gone, but that doesn’t erase what happened last night.”

Eli’s face hardens. He’s totally bothered by the shitshow that went down, even though he’s trying to hide it.

Knox had given me a hug when he carried me to bed last night. "Everything's going to be okay,” he reassured me as a drop of blood dripped from his knuckles.

“Please don’t tell me you all beat the living shit out of him last night.” I cringe now thinking about it.

“No,” says Eli, opening the door wider. “But we did what we needed to do.”

“A sudden wave of anxiety has me sitting upright in bed. “You could get arrested and charged. This is serious.”

“Not as serious as us threatening his life if he opens his mouth to anyone about what we did to his arm.”

“Jesus. What the fuck did you do?”

“Don’t worry about it,” says Eli. “He took one look at the rifle in Cash’s hands and ran for the hills. Pathetic little guy, really.”

Not as pathetic as me. I just can’t believe that happened.

“Come on.” Eli offers his hand, and I take it. I need all the strength I can get, and these men have so much of it.

Besides, they’re the only people I can face at the moment.

My eyes gravitate back to the phone on the nightstand.

“Don’t.” Eli levels me a look. “You’ll make things worse.”

“I need to—”

“Eat. That’s what you need to do.” He takes my hand and pulls me out of my blanket cocoon. “Henry’s in his room playing with his stuffed animals.”

Guilt rips through my chest, opening a new wound. Oh god, not Henry. Please. He can’t be dragged into this mess.
