“Sienna?” I press her for a response—she always seems to have one at the ready. “What are you doing?”

Air must be lodged in her throat. She can’t speak. That has got to be a first.

“I-I’m… I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be here.”

“No,” I counter. “You shouldn’t be here. You could get caught in an avalanche."

“Or I could make it back home safely in one piece.”

I drag her up the hill. She has no choice in the matter, considering how much bigger I am than her.

“You don’t understand,” she says when we make it to her car—even more blocked in by the snow drift than before.

“What don’t I understand?” I pull her around to face me, and we come to a stop. “Tell me.”

Her eyes peel back in fright, mouth opening and closing as she tries to find the words.

I frown, deciding to ease my grip slightly. She’s looking at me like I’m a monster and I don’t like how it makes me feel.

“Sienna.” I try again, lowering my voice.

“I have work and meetings and—”

“You’re free to go as soon as the snow melts.”

Two lines emerge between Sienna’s brows. “Why does it feel like you’re keeping me captive?”

“Call it what you want, but I’m doing this for your own good.”

“Why?” she says, her gaze deepening. “You don’t even know me.”

“I don’t need to.”

“Why are you going above and beyond to save me? I’m a stranger. You don’t owe me anything." Her eyes search mine, turning shrewd. “What the hell do you want from me?”

I ignore the contractions in my chest and continue dragging Sienna up to the cabin. “I want to make sure you’re safe.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“You don’t have to, darling. You just need to do as you're told and stay here until it’s safe enough for you to leave.”

Sienna laughs to herself as I drag her up.

“This isn’t funny.”

“If you kill me, someone’s going to find out about it,” she says. “You might get away with all kinds of crimes up here, but I’m Sienna Lane. The whole world knows who I am. And they’re about to find out who you are.”

I spin around, tightening my lock on her wrist.

She drags her gaze down to my hand.

“I have expensive lawyers,” she says, her gaze back on my face. “You’ll be in prison for the rest of your life if you even think about hurting me.”

Oh, fucking hell…

She thinks I’m doing this to hurt her?

To have her all to myself?
