But Fiona was not impressed.
"Nae that one," she said. But even as she said it, she wondered, very briefly, what it would be like being married to such a man.
She did not think about it long, though.
"An' nae anyone," Fiona said, pushing her head toward the others. She needed to make this crystal clear. "Grace, I am nae getting married, nae now, nae ever."
Grace made eyes at her. "That's a wee bit drastic, isnae it?" she said.
"I'm nae sure a nun's robes would suit ye, dear sister," Aileen added with a canny grin wrapped around her face.
Fiona bristled. "Haud yer wheesht," she huffed. "I'm nae taking holy orders, just being practical. I've only been handed the reins o' the clan for a month, an' I certainly am nae going tae shackle us tae anyone else. This gold is ours."
Grace and the others looked at each other. Fiona remained resolute.
"The Duncans will nae be tied tae anyone else. We might need Greenock's permission, an' even share it, but in everything else, we will remain alone," she added. But really, she was speaking for herself.
As much as she was attracted to Clyde, Fiona refused to let herself be swayed. She liked him, but he was only there for the treasure.
That much he had made clear.
There was no way she was going to give him an inch.
Reluctantly, Grace nodded.
"Alright," she said, looking to Billie. "Then, here's tae a treaty between us...strictly business..."
