There was a beat of silence. “‘Tis not the same.”

“‘Tis the same, or do ye deny that ye outstayed yer welcome because of me?”

“That is a trick, and ye well know it. If I say that I wasnae at Loch Moran because of ye, ye will take offense, and if I say that I was, I am proving yer point.” He paused suddenly and made a strange noise. “Did ye not have breakfast this morn, Wife?”

“I did.”

“‘Tis not yet noon.”

“Nay, ‘tis not.”

“Ye have a full spread of food on the table.” He spoke carefully now as if he were walking through a field of enemies. “Sweetcakes. Bread. Cheese. And fish stew?”

“Aye. All of those things.” Leaning forward, she snagged another cake and lifted it to his lips. “Ye may have one.”

“There are five,” he pointed out before he looked at her expression. Eyebrows shooting up, he cleared his throat. “So, ‘tis vera generous of ye to offer me one.”

After he took a bite, she rose from his lap and began walking around the table, her fingers trailing the wood. Lately, she had so much energy. “I was thinking of starting a new project,” she said slyly. “Annella has made an apt student, and she has been so much help that my position as a healer is not taking up much of my time.”

“Whatever yer heart desires,” he murmured as he looked back at the table again and stared at all the food.

“Excellent, I would like to convert my bedchamber. I never use it, and it just sits empty most of the time. We should move the bed out of it and add a wardrobe because yer wardrobe will never fit all of my clothes.”

“Nay, it will not.” he still looked perplexed as he studied the food. “Darling, is this gravy on yer vegetables?”

“Yes, my love. So once the bed is removed, I will speak to the furniture maker about new furniture, and I have already commissioned Gemma to make some tapestries for me. Something bright and uplifting for that room.”

Leaning forward, he stuck his finger in the potatoes and licked them. “Sugar. Jillian, these are sugared potatoes. Do we have a new cook?”

“Nay, I like Mary’s work just fine. She is an excellent cook.”

“So we are testing new recipes?”

“Graeme, ye are vera fixated on the food when I would like to have yer attention elsewhere.” Glancing around, she walked back toward him, lifted her skirts, and straddled him.

That got his attention. Curving his finger under her chin, he lifted his face. “And where would ye like my attention?”

“On my project. Ye should have a say in it as well.”

“I am certain I will find whatever ye do to the chambers pleasing.” He skimmed his hands up her body and frowned. His hands moved back over her abdomen.

With a smile, she waited, but he just kissed her again. “I have some time before training if ye want to enjoy yer bed one last time before ye have it removed.”

Honestly, sometimes she felt her husband was so dense. “I havenae finished my meal,” she pointed.

“All right. Eat yer fill.”

“Will ye still love me if I am fat?”

“Aye.”

“And waddling about the room?”

“Of course.”

“Because I may be larger than the keep in a few months,” she said finally. “But the cook has been so good about pleasing my cravings. I will need help with the nursery though...”

His grip tightened, and he made a strangled noise. “Jillian,” he said hoarsely, and he glanced behind her to the table. Enlightenment finally dawned on him, and he grinned. “Ye are with child.”
