He brought her hand to his mouth and dragged his tongue along the pulse point of her wrist.
Nora gasped, trembling at the sensation.
“Delicious,” he growled against her skin.
Then he released her, chuckling at her unsteadiness.
She inhaled sharply, clutching the bar to remain standing, arousal—and annoyance—warring within her.
“Bastard,” she bit out.
His laughter was dark and sinful. “I haven’t even gotten started yet.”
Heat flooded her cheeks even as her core clenched in need. She refused to give him the satisfaction of a witty retort. Instead, she did what any woman would do when she felt herself getting in too deep—she ran away.
Not literally, but she did move, using the call of another patron to make it seem as if she just needed to get back to doing her job. But she felt the weight of his gaze the entire night she moved back down the bar, molten blue eyes that turned silver while tracking her every movement.
Marking her.
Claiming her.
And when she glanced back at him, that damn predatory smile curling his lips made her shiver with a mix of fear and longing.
Rafe nursed his whiskey slowly, never taking his eyes off the raven-haired beauty behind the bar. Ever since their charged introduction earlier, he had been transfixed by her every move. Watching her, Rafe was overcome by the urge to go to her, take her in his arms, and inhale her sweet citrus scent again and again..
Nora. Even her name was music to his heightened senses. His inner wolf paced impatiently, desperate to claim their mate. But Rafe held back, biding his time as he observed her graceful movements and listened to her bright laughter.
He couldn’t just blurt out that she was his mate – not without scaring her off, at least. No, he’d have to play this carefully, and figure out how to approach it in a way that didn’t send her running for the hills.
This was going to be one hell of a ride, and he couldn’t wait to see where it would take them. But first, he needed to get a handle on the wild, untamed power coursing through his veins – before it consumed him completely.
CHAPTER THREE
. . .
“I would ask why took you so long, but I see you introduced yourself to that hunk of yumminess at the end of the bar.” Dil nudged Nora as she made her way back up the bar. It seemed as if the amount of people in the bar had doubled in just the few moments her attention had been turned to Rafe.
“Dil, you know I’m not looking.”
“There’s not looking and then there’s not looking. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t look. And, yeah, I mean just look. I know your pussy is locked up as tight as your spells.”
Nora rolled her eyes but glanced back down to the end of the bar—and promptly forgot what she’d been going to do.
The wolf was gorgeous.
Nora’s mouth went dry at the sight of him, a wall of muscle and sin under a black shirt and black jeans. His blue eyes were molten silver now, piercing, and predatory, scanning the room as if he owned it.
Looking at her as if he owned her.
As if. Nora might find him sexy as hell, but she was not a woman easily swayed by a handsome face and charming smile.
Her current single state could attest to that.
Nora was immune to the charms of Heaven’s Gates patrons, no matter how good-looking. But something about this man’s intense ice-blue gaze made her knees weak. Get a grip, she scolded herself, even as her heart slammed against her ribs.
Dil nudged her. “Told you. Alpha shifter. Tried to bed him, but he cut me down.” Dil smirked playfully. “Now he’s yours for the taking, kitten.”
“As if.” A naughty thrill danced up her spine. Nora licked her lips, heat pooling between her thighs. She shook her head and turned to make a few more drinks, but her gaze turned time and time again to the wonderful specimen of maleness.
