“Can you... tell me a story?” Nora requested, searching for a distraction. She needed something to fill the silence, to quench the fire that threatened to consume them both.
“Alright,” he agreed after a pause, his voice deep and husky.
As Rafe began to weave a tale, his words painted vivid pictures in Nora’s mind. He described his pack, how they had worked together to achieve so much. She could feel how proud he was of each of them. Each sentence seemed to draw them closer, a rope connecting their souls. She clung to every detail, her body aching with the need to close the distance between them.
“Rafe?” Nora interrupted, the intensity of her emotions overwhelming her.
“Y-yes?” He stammered, caught off guard by her sudden interjection.
“Thank you,” she whispered, gratitude lacing her voice. “I needed this.”
“Me too,” he admitted quietly, his vulnerability apparent in the tremble of his tone. “Goodnight, Nora.”
“Goodnight, Rafe,” she responded, a bittersweet smile gracing her lips.
As they drifted into uneasy slumber, the electric current between them pulsed through the cabin’s walls. The haze outside lay in wait, a promise for the future as fated mates continued to resist temptation... for now.
CHAPTER FIVE
. . .
To say they were both a little grumpy and out of sorts the next day was an understatement.
They had spent the day trying to ignore each other. They’d eaten, watched some television. Useless activities.
Rafe couldn’t take his eyes off Nora, sitting on the couch, her long wavy hair cascading down her back as she read a book. His muscles tensed with every breath she took, frustration etched on his face, he clenched his jaw and fists, trying to suppress the overwhelming desire to claim her right then and there.
“Damn it,” Rafe muttered under his breath, feeling the pull stronger than ever. He needed to taste her, to mark her as his, and yet something held him back. He could feel the mating heat coursing through his veins, a fire that threatened to consume him if left unchecked. And he knew it had nothing to do with the damn spell.
But, until he eliminated the spell, she would never believe him.
“Are you alright?” Nora asked, noticing his furrowed brow as she looked up at him. Her dark eyes sparkled with concern, only fueling his hunger for her.
“Fine,” he replied curtly, his voice husky and strained. He tried to maintain his composure, but his body betrayed him; the way his eyes darkened with lust, pupils dilating, would tell her everything she needed to know.
He was slowly being consumed by lust.
Although, lust was not the correct word.
This was love.
The everlasting kind. He knew it from the depths of his soul.
“I’m going outside.” He opened the door and the protection spell sparked. He didn’t care, he needed the fresh air, hoping it would settle his wolf.
“No,” Nora immediately protested getting her feet. “It’s too dangerous.”
“Honey, danger is my middles name. And we need to know what this is.”
“We know what it is. It’s the spell.”
“Listen, Nora, I’ll be honest with you, I’m not sure how long I’m going to be able to control my wolf.” He placed his hands on her arms. “And if that haze gets any closer, all bets are off.”
“What do you mean?”
“My wolf wants you, baby, he wants you bad.”
Nora bit her lip, a habit she had when she was troubled. It was one that was driving Rafe slowly out of his mind. He wanted to take that plump bottom lip between his teeth, sucking it into his mouth and tasting her ripe flesh. Of course, that was just one tiny thing he wanted to do to his mate.
