I turned toward Kaior.

She was still sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at me like she couldn't believe what had just happened.

"You okay?"

She nodded, but I could see she was still shaken up.

"I'm fine."

"No, you ain't." I picked up her suitcase and set it by the bedroom door before holding my hand out. "Give Hulk the house keys."

She frowned.

"What?"

"The house keys."

She reached into her purse, pulled out the key ring, and dropped it into my hand. I walked into the living room and held them out to Hulk.

"Get the rest of her stuff."

"I got it." Hulk leaned forward and spoke loud enough for only me to hear. “This nigga talking about we need to leave before he calls the police.”

I looked back at Kaior.

"Go wait in the truck."

She didn't move.

"Jokah..."

"I'll be out in a minute."

"Please..." Her voice was just above a whisper. "Please don't kill him."

I looked at her for a long second.

"You ain't gotta worry about that. Now go wait in the truck."

Kaior studied my eyes like she was trying to decide whether to believe me.

“Kaior.”

I didn’t yell or get loud with her. I didn’t need to because right after that she picked up her purse, looked at Kyrie one last time, and walked out. I waited until she closed the front door. Then I looked back at Kyrie.

"You think calling the police scare me?" I took a slow step towards him. "You should be worried about who gon' answer when they leave."

Kyrie swallowed hard.

"By tomorrow morning, you ain't gon' have a job, a bitch, or nowhere to live."

Then I looked over at Hulk.

"Lock the door."
