I looked over at her. She looked comfortable. The wall she had been holding onto since the night we met wasn't completely gone, but it damn sure wasn't standing as tall as it used to.
She tucked her legs beneath her and took another sip of 1800 like she didn't have a care in the world. That's all I wanted.
Her phone buzzed against the seat between us.
She glanced at it, then looked away just as fast, but I caught it.
"Somewhere you need to be?"
"No." She said quickly, before turning her phone over. "I'm exactly where I wanna be."
I studied her for a second, letting the silence do the talking first. Then I reached for her phone, dropped it into her purse, and zipped it shut.
"When you're with me, I need your undivided attention."
She looked up at me.
"You're with me tonight." I leaned into her space until my lips were just inches from hers. "Fuck that nigga. He had his chance."
I smiled, while taking a slow sip of my drink. She never looked away. Instead, she reached up, grabbed the front of my jacket, and pulled me into a kiss.
The boat was still drifting quietly under the lights. That's exactly how I wanted it. The drinks had loosened her up by then. She wandered over to the railing, resting her forearms against it while she took in the skyline stretched across the water. I finished my drink, set the glass down, and walked over behind her. I was close enough to feel the warmth of her body.
My hand settled against her thigh, slow enough to give her every opportunity to move away, but she didn't. Kaior stayed right where she was, her body relaxing against mine as the breeze rolled across the water. She wasn't running anymore.
The playlist shifted a second later, and Pardison Fontaine's "Shea Butter" floated through the speakers.
"You know this one?"
"Yeah."
"Good."
She looked up at me.
"Why good?"
I leaned down and whispered in her ear.
"Listen."
I started rapping along under my breath, watching her more than I was listening to the music. I caught her looking at me when Pardi rapped... ‘I heard you when you told me you already got a man...’
She looked away first. And before she even realized it, she was moving with the music. Kaior swayed against me, slow at first, then a little faster once she settled into the beat. I smiled and matched her rhythm, as my hand rested against her inner thigh. She wasn't just listening to the music anymore. She was listening to the lyrics and she got the message. I caught her smiling, then I thought ‘yeah, she loves this shit.’
"Are you always this good at getting what you want?" she asked, her voice softer than it had been all night.
"Always."
She laughed.
"That sounds cocky."
I shook my head.
"Nah."
"Then what is it?"
