"I'll see you later."

"I'll call you when I’m on my way."

"Okay. And don’t go to sleep either. You can sleep over here."

"I'm not. I gotta go."

After I ended the call, I stared at my reflection in the mirror. Then I powered off my phone and slipped it into my pocket, unlocked the bathroom door, and quietly climbed back into bed. Kaior shifted in her sleep the second I wrapped my arm around her waist.

She scooted closer without opening her eyes and rested her hand over mine. I kissed the back of her shoulder. She smiled in her sleep. And just like that the guilt settled right back on my chest. My hand drifted over her side as I pulled her a little closer.

"Mmm..." she mumbled, still half asleep.

"Morning."

"Kyrie..."

Her voice was raspy with sleep.

"I gotta get ready for work."

"You got time."

"I don't."

I kissed her again, hoping she would change her mind. She laughed softly and nudged my arm.

"Stop."

"For real?"

"Yes, for real."

"You always rushing."

"I'm not rushing. I actually have somewhere to be."

I let out a dramatic sigh. "You breaking my heart before breakfast."

She rolled over to face me with a smile on her face. "You'll live."

"For now."

She shook her head, leaned over, and kissed me once.

"There. Are you happy now?"

"A little."

"And I’m still mad at you.”

“I know baby. I’m sorry.”

She climbed out of bed and stretched before walking toward the bathroom. I watched her disappear behind the door. Truth was moments like that were the reason I hadn't left. When it was just me and Kaior, things felt easy.

She had been rocking with me for three years. She knew my habits, my work schedule, what I liked to eat after getting off shift, and exactly how to calm me down after a bad night. That version of her felt like home. The problem was home had started feeling routine. And somewhere along the way, I got comfortable enough to stop appreciating the woman standing right in front of me. That was my first mistake.

The shower cut on a few seconds later. I laid there staring at the ceiling until I heard her humming. Kaior always sang in the shower. It didn't matter if she was happy, mad, stressed, or tired, music always made her happy.
