I reached up and lightly smoothed the front of his uniform shirt, and his entire body locked up.

"See?" I teased. "Now your collar looks all crooked."

"I can fix—"

Before he could finish, I leaned in just enough to whisper near his ear. "You always been so nice to me."

His breathing hitched. I let my fingers trail briefly across his arm, then gave his ear a playful lick before stepping back with the most innocent smile I could manage.

“Let me in, so I can surprise him. I promise I won’t tell him that you let me in.”

“Umm…o-okay.”

"Thank you, Jeff."

The poor boy looked like his soul had left his body. "I... uh... I..."

He fumbled for the access panel, hit the wrong button twice, then finally buzzed the elevator. The doors opened with a soft ding.

I blew him a kiss. "You're the sweetest."

"I'm fired," he sighed, burying his face in both hands.

The elevator doors slid open, and I stepped into the penthouse like I still lived there. For a second, I just stood there. Everything looked the same, but the only thing missing was me. I kicked my heels off by the door and made my way down the hallway toward the master bedroom like muscle memory was doing all the work. I opened the closet where my things were and it was empty. Well, of me anyway.

"This trifling ass man," I mumbled.

I checked the drawers. Nothing. The second closet. Nothing. Not one pair of leggings, not one bonnet, not one hoodie. Not even an old T-shirt. I folded my arms and huffed.

"Damn! He really got rid of all my shit."

This nigga pissed me clean the fuck off with his antics.

"Oh well."

I shrugged and headed for the bathroom. Steam quickly filled the room as I turned on the shower.

A hot shower always helped me think or at least helped me convince myself whatever I was about to do made sense. Twenty minutes later, I stepped out, wrapped a towel around myself, and wandered back into the bedroom. Since every trace of me had disappeared, I grabbed one of Jokah's oversized black T-shirts from the drawer and pulled it over my head. It swallowed me whole, but it would work. I caught my reflection in the mirror and smirked.

"Still look better on me."

I padded into the guest bathroom and opened the linen cabinet. His spare luxury robes were folded exactly where always kept them. Some habits never changed. I grabbed one, carried it back into the bedroom, and tossed it across the chair at the foot of the bed just in case I needed it. Then I slipped beneath the covers, letting the familiar scent of his laundry detergent fill the quiet room. I fluffed his pillow, got comfortable, and pulled the comforter up to my shoulders.

"Let's see how long that attitude last."

I closed my eyes and waited.

CHAPTER FIVE

By the time we left Noir Lounge, it was pushing four in the morning. Poncho climbed behind the wheel of my bulletproof Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow while I dropped into the passenger seat. I had enough tequila in my system to know I had no business driving, so I tossed him the keys without saying a word.

"You straight?"

"I'm good."

"You sure?"

"I said I'm good."
