My brother clenches his jaw and returns to staring straight ahead.
“The one they set on fire was Fergal,” he says.
I blow out a breath. Fergal’s one of Da’s best, going all the way back to the old country.
“Da’s at Sinai with him, isn’t he?”
Liam gives a sharp nod. There’s no question Da’s guarding Fergal himself.
“Mam?” I ask. Mam was close with Fergal’s wife, but she died from cancer a few years back. At least the woman didn’t have to see her husband burned to shit.
“Mam’s the one who told Da,” Liam says.
“How the hell did she know first?”
“How does Mam know anything?”
“Good point.”
Briefly, I wonder how it’ll go between Mam and Cora at lunch. Entertainingly bad, I’m guessing. It’ll depend on how obedient Cora decides to be, which doesn’t bode well for her. But she’ll figure it out. Or she won’t.
Right now I have other concerns.
“What’s our retaliation?” I ask.
Because there will be a retaliation.
But my brother doesn’t tell me what. He only tells me when.
“Tomorrow night.”
The delay means we’re planning something big. It also means I won’t have to cancel my plans for tonight.
“Me and you?” I ask. “Will we need Blackbird?” Depending on the job, it could be useful to have our sniper covering us.
“No Blackbird,” Liam says. A mobile job, then. “Just you, me, Finn, and James.”
“Finn,” I say bluntly. I won’t question Liam outright. But we both know our younger brother can be a wild card.
“And James,” Liam says again, naming one of our most loyal soldiers. That does inspire a bit more confidence. “I’ll tell them both. For now, you just get back to that pretty new wife of yours.”
“Sure.” I leave him to his workout.
But I don’t go back to my gorgeous new wife. I have other arrangements to make for the both of us.
Tonight will be fun.
Chapter 10
Cora
I feel my husband’s eyes on me as I walk away from him and the overfilled breakfast cart. I don’t glance back.
In the honeymoon suite’s bedroom, the comforter is a tangled mess. It looks like Brady must’ve been thrashing around all night rather than sleeping peacefully. Serves him right. As I walk past the bed, I get a faint whiff of his scent from the sheets. God, he smells amazing.
I glance over at the empty doorway. Brady can’t see me from here, but I close the door and lock it anyway. I drop my robe to the floor, then lean over the bed, smoothing my hands over the sheets where he slept.
The bed is so wide I can’t reach his dented pillow, and I find myself crawling onto the plush mattress so I can pull it toward me. I hold his pillow to my face and take the biggest inhale I can.
