Gallows blows out a breath, running a hand down his face. “Rev, call Hollis. Tell him we want the full package. Cobb died on our watch, he’ll be buried in full colors.”

“Yes, Prez.”

“Church over. I got to make a call, and break a momma’s heart.”

We file out of Church silently, minds on our fallen brother. Yet another one I couldn’t save. How many more have to fall before God decides I’ve had enough?

“Revenant?” Sunny asks, head tipped back, her impossibly dark eyes questioning.

“Sunny,” I choke out.

I need to tell her not to rely on me. I only bring pain. Suffering. Death. My gut clenches and then she’s there. Her soft lips on mine, her tongue asking for entrance into a mouth that doesn’t deserve her sweetness.

“Sunny-”

“Don’t.”

“You just watched a man die.”

“I know.

“You’re in shock.”

“Probably.”

“I’m broken.”

“You’re bent.”

“You don’t know what you’re asking.”

Her lips find mine again and this time I don’t pull back. I can’t pull back. Not when my arms wrap around her and my hands cup her ass. I lift her effortlessly, and she wraps herself around me like she trusts me. Me.

God has a fucked up sense of humor throwing Sunny Richards in my path. He gave sunshine to the broken man.

God help us both.

Chapter Fourteen

Sunny

It’s happening! It’s really happening! I’m not a virgin in the classic sense, after I let Gary Wilkinson fingerbang me when I was 18 years old. It was so lackluster that I never thought to try again until I spotted Revenant on the first day he rode into town. Older. Wiser. Sadder and much, much hotter.

I don’t give a damn if he thinks he’s broken. I never fell in love with the Revenant he was before. I fell in love with this one. The one with the sad eyes and broken heart. I’m not arrogant enough to think I can heal him. But I can stand by him and make his days a little brighter. Or at the very least more exciting.

He gently carries me up the stairs, down the hall of a million doors before we reach his room. Warm, cozy, all him. He reverently lowers me to the bed, brushing my hair from my forehead as he lays me back on the pillows that smell like him. Safe.

He backs away, eyes not leaving mine for a second as he stands at the foot of the bed, peeling his cut off his broad shoulders. He folds it gently and places it on a desk in the corner and my gaze takes in the way his hands shake just a little. His shoulders rise and fall and he turns to me, brows furrowed, as if he doesn’t know whether to come closer or to run. He does neither, instead just stares at me. His gaze moves down my body, then back again. He stares at me for so long it starts to make me squirm a little.

“Take a picture, it’ll last longer,” I tease, mainly to get rid of the nerves that are wildly bouncing around my belly.

“One day I will,” he rasps out. “For now, I’m just trying to convince myself you’re with me.”

My lips can’t stop the smile that blooms on my face, or the relief that rushes through me. I think I may have worn him down. He’s not running, he’s not talking me out of this. No, instead he stands there like a man who has made up his mind. He’s choosing me. Oh my God, he’s unbuckling his pants!

He’s so hot my clit is pulsing against the seam of my jeans and I need to relieve the pressure. If he’s losing his pants, then so am I.

I quickly toe off my boots, wildly kicking my feet until they tumble to the floor. Then I unbutton and unzip my jeans, shoving them down my legs along with my panties. I throw off my top and bra and lay back on the pillows in time to see Revenant hesitate a little. His hand stalls on his zipper, as if he’s going to put that wall up between us again. His eyes meet mine and I watch the moment he makes the decision. His jaw tightens and he frees the biggest, best looking peen I’ve ever seen in my life.
