He intoned his head. “Not yet.”
“He said he gettin’ married to Ms. Raven,” Cai giggled.
Ivy gave a hint of a smile. “She likes surprises.”
“I know.” Darius breathed a sigh in relief. These were Raven’s friends, and they wanted to protect her. Rather than take offense, he felt gratitude that she’d found a safe haven in Endurance.
“Now, if you could write me down directions.”
“You don’t need them, Darius.”
“But-”
Ivy placed a hand on his shoulder. “See those pine trees lining both sides of the road...just follow them into the valley.”
Could it be that simple? If he had paid attention to what was right in front of him, he could have found his way to Raven. What else had he missed?
“Thanks.”
“That’ll be three dollars?”
“For what?” Darius quizzed.
“The water,” Cai giggled. “You drank it.”
Reaching for his wallet, Darius had to laugh. Ivy and Cai joined in.
Owen held up a hand. “Sorry. He’s gotten pretty good at closing the deal.”
“He must get it from you.”
Miss Petry was right. Cai was a bright kid. His father was teaching him business ownership, engaging the customer, making the sale. Darius wondered if more of these lessons were in store for him with his own son. He looked forward to them.
