“Major!” she shouted as she rushed toward me.

“You were sleeping with the fucking enemy! How could you?”

“What? I didn’t know. I swear, I didn’t know,” she cried.

“Aye, man. Calm down. She’s not your enemy, Major. Think about what you’re saying,” Brax reasoned.

I couldn’t think about shit. My brain was in overdrive trying to process the last fifteen minutes.

“Major—”

Dynastie reached for my arm, but I moved away before she could touch me, causing her to halt her words.

“I need a minute,” I told them before walking past Dynastie.

“The police are on their way,” I heard her say as I headed down the stairs.

Jordan/Dontrellwas arrested, and I went into my condo with two other officers to assess the damage. It was a lot, to say the least. While they took pictures, I walked around, mentally taking inventory of what was once my home, and I couldn’t stop the tears from falling.

“They’re just things, baby, and they can be replaced.”

Major was trying to comfort me, but after what he’d said less than ten minutes ago, he could really kiss my ass.

“Everythingand everyoneis replaceable,” I responded, full of attitude, and walked into my bedroom.

He followed me, wrapping me in his arms from behind and forcing me to stop walking.

“I’m sorry, Lovie. I didn’t mean that shit.”

“Tuh. I think you did. I think you believed him, even though I told you I never?—”

“Gimme a break, Lovie. It was a lot to process.”

We were standing in my walk-in closet, where all my clothes had been pulled from the hangers and were on the floor. The stench of urine combined with bleach filled the air, and I felt like I would vomit at any moment.

He put his hands on my shoulders and turned me around. His index finger slipped under my chin, and he lifted my head, then used his thumbs to wipe my tears.

“I’m sorry this happened to you. I’m sorry I took my anger out on you. I’m sorry for what I said. I’m sorry that a situation in my life put you in the middle of something that had nothing to do with you. I’m so sorry for everything, baby.”

I didn’t want to, but I let my head fall onto his chest and released more tears. He held me until I lifted my head and stepped away.

“I can’t breathe in here,” I told him.

We left my closet, and I looked around my bedroom. It looked like Freddy Krueger or Edward Scissorhands had gotten hold of it and went to town. My heart skipped a beat when I thought about my safe. I rushed to the side of my bedframe and looked under the bed.

“Oh, thank God.”

I pulled the small safe from underneath the bed and held it to my chest, wrapping my arms around it.

“What’s in there?” Major asked.

“Some very important things.”

The TV that had been mounted on the wall lay on the floor next to me, shattered, and there was a hole in the wall where it had been. I stood, still holding the safe, looking around at the damage.

“I have to start all over.”

“I got you, baby, for whatever you need.”
