Turning to the washbasin, she pours clean water from a ceramic pitcher—a gentle, entirely foreign sound against the ringing violence still echoing in my skull. She dips a clean linen cloth into the water, wringing the fabric before stepping directly between my spread knees.

The closeness steals the oxygen from the air. She reaches upward, the heat of her small fingers grazing my skin before theyactually settle against the sharp angle of my uninjured face to steady my head.

The contact short-circuits my mind. Raised in a sterile, loveless hierarchy, I am a creature of cold calculation. Physical contact is exclusively a weapon—wielded only to harm, to dominate, or to extract a blood-debt. No one touches the High Sovereign of House Thosti unless they are holding a blade.

Yet her thumb brushes over my skin, the friction terrifyingly soft.

"You did not dodge." Her intense focus anchors to the shallow wound on my cheek as she presses the damp cloth against the cut. The sting of the water fails entirely to mask the searing, static heat radiating from her fingertips. "I heard the clash of steel. You have the reach of a giant. You should not have taken this hit."

"If I shifted my stance to evade the strike," I rasp, the sound rough and barely recognizable as my own, "his blade would have buried itself into your door."

Her hand stalls against my jaw. Lowering the cloth, her amber gaze drops from the cut to collide with my silver irises. The flickering alchemy light catches the profound, unshielded weight of her realization.

"Why are you doing this?" A fierce tremor bleeds into her statement. "Kryven is burning your wealth. Your own Patriarch is blockading your borders. Is one Lowtown stray worth the ruin of your entire estate?"

"No lord of the Undercity dictates my sums." The Khuzuth arrogance slips effortlessly off my tongue. "Not Kryven, and not Varynth. They do not order me."

It is a political truth, but as her gaze remains locked with mine, the magnitude of the lie hiding beneath it fractures my discipline.

The scent of her skin, the impossible warmth radiating from her fragile body, the fearlessness in her posture—it drives a wild, tearing ache straight to the core of my existence. She is a mortal. To my caste, she is nothing more than livestock meant to toil in the dirt.

But as she stands between my knees, defying the entire dark architecture of my world, I do not see a stray. I see a brilliant, violent mind that I want to map entirely. I want to unravel the fierce, stubborn compassion that kept her alive in the gutters. I crave the exact weight of her thoughts. I need to understand how a fragile human brought the master of a dark elf estate to his knees without ever drawing a weapon.

I am not simply protecting a liability to preserve my pride. The crushing realization shatters centuries of iron discipline in a single, ragged breath.

I am entirely, irrevocably taken by her.

MEGAN

The stench of spilled blood and the sharp, biting ash of Zhetrin's magic saturate the room, crowding the surroundings. He sits before me, a towering immortal bearing a freshly cleaned wound on his face. The freezing indifference that usually coats his silver irises has shattered. Volatile, electric static crackles in the space separating us.

Dropping the damp linen cloth into the washbasin, I sever the silence. "I am going to the war room with you."

Zhetrin freezes.

"People are bleeding in the corridors to reach me." I step away from the basin, pressing the issue. "Kryven’s hounds are breaching your wards. The Patriarch is severing your trade. I will not sit in this velvet cage and wait for the slaughter to reach my door."

He rises, his seven feet of lethal, coiled muscle instantly swallowing the room as he steps forward to claim my space.

"You do not comprehend the violence of my world." The glacial rumble of his voice vibrates through the stone floor beneath my feet.

"I survived the Lowtown gutters. I know violence."

"You know survival." He breaches the remaining distance, forcing me backward until the backs of my knees strike the mattress. "You do not know the Khuzuth."

A predatory blur of motion steals my breath. His massive hand locks around my waist, driving me backward onto the mattress before I can brace myself. The world violently tips as my back hits the deep indigo silks.

He follows me down, the density of his frame trapping my lower half as his thighs part my knees. His grip easily encases both of my wrists, pinning them into the pillows above my head. The long, pale fingers of his free hand descend upon my throat.

He does not squeeze. He merely rests his calloused fingertips over my pulse point, a physical promise of how effortlessly he could snap my neck.

I gasp, my chest heaving against the immovable planes of his torso. The thick hide of his coat, the biting silver clasps, the raw, suffocating heat radiating from his frame—it overwhelms my senses entirely.

"I could crush the life from you in a heartbeat." His face descends, hovering a torturous hairsbreadth from mine. "A single flex of my fingers. You are a fragile, breakable thing, Megan. What makes you so entirely fearless?"

He intends it as a threat—a harsh lesson in my own mortality. But his eyes burn an invisible, searing trail along my jawline. His focus drops to my throat, tracking the frantic, rapid hitch of my chest beneath the thin linen shift.
