Deafening silence follows. I just stripped a high lord's entire ruling philosophy to the bone, publicly naming him an incompetent coward.

No one moves. The undeniable truth of the sums crushes the oxygen from the hall. Kryven’s jaw works uselessly.

A bright, sharp laugh shatters the quiet.

A female dark elf steps from the ranks of the stunned onlookers. The alchemy light catches her chin-length silver hair and the deep, bruised plum of her irises. Lady Nyxira Velmorne. One of the highest-ranking neutral nobles in the Undercity.

Nyxira clicks her dark fingernail against the rim of her wine goblet, a wicked, delighted smile curving her lips.

"By the Arbiter’s scales." Nyxira's words carry effortlessly across the hall. "The mortal’s sums are flawless, Kryven. You trade long-term prosperity for cheap theater. She just audited your entire estate without a single drop of ink."

The whispers resume, but they pivot entirely away from me. The surrounding lords turn their sudden, calculating disdain toward Kryven. In a society that worships ruthless intellect, a human just gutted Kryven on the floor of the High Assembly.

Kryven’s features contort into a mask of unhinged malice. The rotting-earth pressure of his magic explodes outward. He reaches for his longblade, the steel hissing as it clears the scabbard.

Before the blade can fully catch the light, Zhetrin moves.

The shift is instantaneous. He eclipses me, interposing his towering bulk between my fragile frame and Kryven’s steel. He does not draw his weapon. He simply unleashes the catastrophic force of his magic.

The polished floor beneath our feet groans. The alchemy lamps above us shatter in unison, raining harmless, glittering dust into the dark. The freezing, ash-choked wave of Zhetrin’s power crashes against Kryven, physically forcing the rival lord down to one knee.

"Draw that steel an inch further." The promise of slaughter echoes in the freezing air. "And I will leave your head on the banquet table."

Kryven chokes, struggling to pull oxygen through the suffocating chains of Zhetrin’s magic. The rival lord lowers the blade, the hatred burning in his eyes guaranteeing a war.

Zhetrin stands over the kneeling lord, anchoring my defiance, sealing the rivalry in blood.

ZHETRIN

The thick vellum map of the Undercity unrolls across the war room table, the weighted brass corners snapping down against the ironwood.

Dragging an ink-stained finger across the western trade routes, Eldric taps a series of freshly drawn black crosses marking the borders of our territory. The bronze skin of the Zagfer archivist's face pulls tight with exhaustion.

"The severing is spreading, Lord Zhetrin." Eldric's voice rings hollow against the cavernous gloom of the chamber. "The neutral merchant houses have been turning their fleets away from our ports since the banquet two days ago. The iron-forges in the south refused our coin this morning. It is no longer just Lord Kryven burning your wagons. He lacks the authority to command the neutral lords."

My focus locks onto the black crosses bleeding into the parchment. The biting scent of burnt copper thickens the air, a manifestation of my rising magic.

"It is the Patriarch." The undeniable truth hardens in my chest. "Varynth is using his sovereign seal to blockade mywealth. He intends to starve my estate until I surrender the human to the executioner’s block."

Tharion emerges from the periphery, the flickering alchemy fire catching the scar on his jaw. The guard captain rests his gauntleted hand upon the pommel of his longblade.

"My scouts report unmarked Khuzuth cloaks moving through the Lowtown ruins." The grim vibration of Tharion's tone bleeds into the room. "They are testing the outer wards. Nameless hounds with expensive steel. They are hunting for a crack in our walls."

I shift my attention to the captain, the silver of my irises catching the flames. "Lock down the iron gates. Double the perimeter watch on the walls. No soul enters or leaves the grounds without my explicit command."

Bowing deeply, Tharion turns on his heel to execute the order.

Enforced silence suffocates the estate. For hours, I walk the grand halls, my boots perfectly muted against the obsidian. As the third watch settles over the stronghold, the atmosphere plummets into a freezing, absolute stillness.

Deep in my chest, a tether snaps.

A taut string breaks under pressure—the magical wards layered across the western residential corridor have been breached.

I move.

The sheer span of my frame allows me to cross the vast distance of the estate with terrifying, liquid speed. Rounding the final archway toward her suite, I unsheathe my longblade. The steel hisses, a sound promising slaughter.
