“He kissed meback. We had sex once in his room and once in his car.”

“In his car?” Sofia seems scandalized but she’s grinning.

“You really did it,” Reese says admiringly. “I didn’t think you had it in you.”

“Please,” Sofia scoffs. “Men are easy.”

“Not this one,” I admit. “He keeps saying it’s a mistake but?—”

“But it happened more than once,” Sofia points out.

“Exactly.”

Reese hums. “I guess it must be hard on him, being hot for his best friend’s daughter.”

Sofia snorts out a laugh. I look down at the car, at him reclining and reading, seemingly relaxed. “He thinks I’m too young for him.”

“Youaretoo young for him,” Sofia says.

I sigh. “I’m old enough to. make my own decisions.”

“I”m guessing your dad doesn’t know about this,” Reese says, sipping his beer. Vaughn beckons him back into the house and he shrugs at me, heading toward her with a goofy grin on his face.

“He’s hopeless.” I turn to look at Sofia, smiling softly. “It’d be nice, though. To have someone look at me like Reese looks at Vaughn.”

“I mean, Dante looks at you all the time.”

“Not likethat,” I say, flushing.

“I don’t know,” she muses. “It isn’t all that different. He looks like he wants to eat you alive.”

“Wish he would,” I snort. “I can’t get him to even look at me anymore. He decided the last time was a mistake.”

“Wasn’t it?”

I look over at her, tilting my head. “You think it was a mistake?”

“Well, be honest with yourself, Sammy. It can’tgoanywhere. He’s your father’s right hand. His best friend.”

I swallow hard. “Yeah I mean, I guess him being off-limits is part of the appeal.”

“Have your fun, Sammy. Just be careful,” she warns. She tilts her cup up and taps the bottom of it. “I’m on empty. Going back inside to grab a drink.”

I nod and keep standing at the rail of the balcony, looking down at the cars and people milling about. Soon enough, someone else comes outside. I hear the spark of a lighter and smell tobacco.

“You want one?” I turn to see a dark haired man, handsome enough, offering me a pack of cigarettes. I shake my head.

“Quit back when I was a kid.”

“Smart cookie.”

I turn around to look at him, curious. “I”m Sam.”

“Ethan.” He gives me a wide grin. “Nice to meet you.”

“You, too. Friend of Reese’s?”

He shrugs. “Friend of a friend, I guess.”
