Understandable.

Now that I wasn’t with Liam, the option of her staying at mine was unworkable, unless two of us shared a room. But we’d do it if we had to. James’s landlord wouldn’t allow another lodger, so there weren’t many options left.

I headed back to my desk and passed a meeting room. Two people I didn’t recognize were making notes on the whiteboard, and their conversation floated into the hallway.

“No, those teams aren’t going now. They’re on the transfer pathway.”

One of them saw me approach and shut the door. What the hell was atransferpathway?

On my desk, an all-staff email had landed while I was gone.

Subject: URGENT: Facilities Update - DeskReallocation

Please do not move ANY equipment until furthernotice.

I closed it without reading the rest, then opened my calendar and stared at the empty blocks around my meeting tomorrow.

HR check-in—11:00 a.m.

Was this something I should be worried about? The terms of my NDA still applied, didn’t they?

I minimized it and went back to work.

Chapter 49

Andrea

Bonnie still wasn’there. I picked up my phone. 11:07. I’d got there early—very unlike me—and had been waiting twelve minutes now.

I sat and crossed my ankles under the chair. There was a jug of water on the table with condensation running down the glass and pooling on the wood. I absentmindedly wiped it with my sleeve, which achieved nothing. On the wall, the framed values statement was slightly crooked.Integrity. Accountability. Excellence.

It was like someone had chosen it especially for the irony.

The door opened, and Bonnie came in.

“Andrea.” She sat and placed a folder on the table. “I won’t keep you long.”

She slid a single sheet of paper out and placed it between us.

“This document came to HR’s attention late last week,” she said. “It’s a written statement regarding an incident involving Liam Roth in his capacity as CEO of Novexia.”

Liam Roth? Why was she being all weird and saying his full name, like we weren’t on first-name terms?

“Sorry, Bonnie, I don’t know—”

“It was in your file, Andrea. You signed it.”

I stared at the paper. I didn’t recognize it.

Or—

Wait.

Oh.

Oh fuck. No.

A thick wave of heat washed over me, threatening to choke me.
