I didn’t want her to think I was stuck in the past. I’ve moved on in all the ways that mattered. The breakup was ugly. So, I was taking my time and living life day to day.

But if I did want a girlfriend, hypothetically speaking, Becca would be exactly the kind of girl I’d go for.

She was smart, funny, and apparently very good with my family. She challenged me but made me laugh too.

Too bad she had a boyfriend.

She nudged my arm. “I’m not trying to pry. I’m just worried about you.”

“I’m fine, trust me. You don’t need to worry about me.”

“I’m your sister. It’s my job to worry about you. I just want you to be happy. If not with Becca, then with someone else.”

I shook my head. “You worry too much.”

“I just want you to be open to the idea. Don’t close yourself off because it’s easier and safer that way.”

She thought I was settling, and maybe I was missing out on something, but I wasn’t in a hurry to hand someone the power to wreck me again. I was going at my own pace.

I nodded. “Just because I enjoy being single doesn’t mean I will be forever. I’m waiting for the right person to come along.”

My eyes drifted back over to the table. I wish Becca weren’t a reporter. I wish she didn’t have a boyfriend. I wish timing weren’t so fucking cruel. But wishing didn’t change a damn thing.

CHAPTER 12

BECCA

Nate

Would you mind if we moved the interview to my place?

Me

Your house?

Nate

Yeah. I’ve been running all week (literally). I’m leaving for an away game tomorrow, and I kind of want to chill at home.

Me

Are you sure?

Nate

Yes. It will be much quieter.

Me

Afraid you’re going to have more fan mail delivered?

That’show I ended up standing on the smooth concrete walkway, staring up at a traditional modern home that looked more fitting for a family of four than a single guy who was always on the road.

I took a deep breath and walked up to Nate’s front door. His house was just outside of Boston, in an upscale gated community. It was quiet and convenient, but also screamed: “Yeah, I got money.”

I pressed the doorbell and glanced down at my outfit. I didn’t usually spend so much time getting ready, but I wasn’t sure how to dress for such a casual meeting. So, I settled on a fitted black blazer over a white blouse and a pair of dark, washed jeans.

When the door swung open, I was not prepared for the sight in front of me. Nate was in a pair of gray sweatpants that hugged his muscular thighs and a royal blue T-shirt with the Hawks logo on the front. He was sporting a little scruff, and his hair was still damp from the shower.
