Yes!But instead, she scoffed and waved a hand to dismiss the comment. “Hardly.”
He smirked like he didn’t believe what she’d said. “She was the Flaming Stars physiotherapist when I was playing footy. Every guy on the team tried hitting on her, but she was never interested. No one could understand it until one day she showed up at a game with hergirlfriend. Most of the boys cried like babies for days.” He chuckled.
“It looked cozy to me.” Lauren narrowed her eyes, still unconvinced.
“She’s an old friend. She comes out with me sometimes and has seen how women can get
a littlefriendlyaround me. So now when we go out for a drink, she pretends that she can’t keep her hands off me, and it keeps the groupies away. It works most of the time.” “Must suck to be you.” Sarcasm dripped from Lauren’s voice.
His full lips tilted up into a smile. “I’m not gonna lie, it used to be a lot of fun, but after years of women throwing themselves at me it got boring.”
“I repeat, must suck to be you.”
He laughed, the sound so low and sexy it did crazy things to her mind and body—most definitely her body. It was time to leave this place before she turned into one of those women she hated who threw themselves at him.
Looking down at their joined hands, Jack’s thumb was now making slow circles on the inside of her wrist. Her nipples peaked and heat ignited between her legs. Yes, he was doing crazy things to her body.
She pulled her wrist free and searched for the nearest exit. “Well, I’m still not interested in anything other than the job.” Her traitorous voice wavered and sounded unconvincing.
“Contrary to what you believe, I don’t have a different woman for each night of the week.” But his alluring green eyes told her he would like her for the night. It was never going to happen. She couldn’t allow herself to go there, no matter how attractive and irresistible Jack was.
“Good night, Jack.”
This time he didn’t stop her from leaving, and disappointment curled in her belly. Damn Jack for doing this to her.
“I’ll walk you out,” he said as he stood. She opened her mouth to tell him no, but he added, “You don’t have a choice. It’s late, and there are a lot of idiots around.”
She knew he probably wouldn’t take no for an answer, so she let him lead her out of Jovi’s.
They stepped out into the night, the sky clear and full of stars, and a cool breeze washed over Lauren’s body, doing little to douse the heat generating from the man standing inches from her. Nothing but a cold shower, or two, could take care of that problem.
“Thanks for the drink, Jack. I’ll come by your office in the morning around eight before I go to work.”
He nodded and said, “I’ll walk you to your car.”
“My car’s not far, I can…”
He narrowed his eyes, and the look left her with no other choice but to walk with him.
“Do you always get what you want?” she asked.
“Not always.”
Scoffing, she gave him a disbelieving look.
They reached her car and she rummaged through her purse for the keys. “I’m now working for you, you’ve taken me out for a drink, and you’ve walked me to my car.” The car beeped when she pressed a button on the keys. “I’d say you’ve gotten everything you wanted from me tonight.”
Moving closer, Jack pressed her up against the side of the car. “If I always got what I want, you’d be in my bed right now.” His warm lips brushed against her jaw. “So tell me,
Lauren, am I going to get everything I want?”
Without waiting for an answer, he pressed his lips firmly on hers. His tongue parted them and, with bold strokes, entered her mouth. A moan involuntarily escaped her. The force of his kiss seared the top of her head and down to the tips of her toes, and every good spot in between.
She hadn’t been kissed this good in years.
Strong fingers tunneled their way into her hair, and her body shivered as if icy fingers trailed down her spine. Knees turning to jelly, she was thankful for the car holding her up. Body taking over from mind, Lauren melted under his mind-blowing touch. As she explored the contours of his chest with her fingertips, his muscles bunched beneath the soft fabric of his shirt.
His lips left her mouth, and she gasped when they found the sensitive spot on the side of her neck. A trail of kisses scorched her skin, and she tilted her neck to the side, giving him better access.
