Even knowing that, I can’t remember the last time I had a smile plastered to my face 24/7 the way I have since Friday. It feels good to be wanted.
So, sooooo good.
I drop into my chair and spin.
I’ve missed this feeling.
“Well, well, well, look who finally showed up.”
I flinch so badly; I almost fall out of my seat.
“Holy crap, Calla, what are you doing here?” I glance at my watch. “It’s not even eight yet.”
“I have an early morning, and I asked Willa to meet me here early. It helps that we finished in time for me to come see you.”
She sips her coffee and sits in the chair across from me. Her eyes are laser focused on mine as she leans back.
“So, what’s really going on between you and my brother?”
I knew this question would come. Simon is expecting it too. Although, I did have high hopes that she’d talk to him first so that I could be a little more prepared.
“Nothing.”
Even as I say the word, I know there’s nothing convincing about it.
“Nothing more than what you know, anyway.”
She raises her left brow and smirks. Yeah, she doesn’t buy it.
“Sure. Sure. So is that why he kissed you in front of me in our mom’s kitchen?”
“He thinks you think we’re dating, so it made sense.”
“I called him out on it at the birthday party, and he didn’t correct me. So he still kissed you even knowing that I know you aren’t really dating.”
There’s no stopping the smile that appears on my lips.
“Really?”
“Yes, really. So tell me what’s going on.”
She seems irritated, and up until this moment, I didn’t really think about how she would feel if we dated.
Shit, does this mean I’m so obsessed with meeting someone that I stopped thinking about how my choices would affect others? Am I a bad friend? How could I have not asked her about this before this moment?
Oh god, what happens if she tells me to stop whatever this is with Simon? It would make sense to call it now before I can let my thoughts get carried away, but being with Simon feels so freeing.
I’m not sure what I’d do.
“We’re… are you mad? I’m sorry I never said anything. It all happened so fast.”
She shakes her head.
“I’m not mad,” she says with a big sigh. “More worried. I don’t know. It’s weird.”
“Weird, how?”
“I haven’t seen Simon show affection toward anyone the way he did with you since Grey’s mom. I don’t know. I don’t want to make it weird talking about her. I’m not comparing you two, it’s just—I don’t know what to think of it.”
